By dusk, the federal cybersecurity team had completely dismantled the Geneva relay node. The syndicate’s European network was burning from the inside out, its accounts seized, its operatives rounded up in coordinated raids across three continents.
Adrian sat at his desk in the grand study, the leather journal open before him. The house was quiet again—not the oppressive, fearful silence of the night Bruno went missing, but the warm, living silence of a home that had finally purged its ghosts.
Maria knocked twice on the open door before stepping inside, holding a fresh cup of black coffee.
“The last of their regional coordinators was picked up in Zurich an hour ago,” Maria said, setting the mug down on the blotter. “The FBI says the syndicate is effectively broken. You’re entirely safe, Adrian.”
“Safe is a relative term, Maria,” Adrian replied, looking up with a tired, ironic smile. “In this house, safety requires a very large dog and a very alert housekeeper.”
“Speaking of the dog,” Maria chuckled, nodding toward the French doors leading to the garden, “he’s currently terrorizing the gardener by refusing to let anyone touch the azaleas until he completes his evening patrol.”

Adrian stood up, stretched his stiff shoulders, and walked over to the window. Down below, on the moonlit lawn, Bruno was pacing a slow, methodical circle around the perimeter fence, his dark silhouette cutting a majestic figure against the silver grass.
The nightmare was over. The liars were gone. And the house belonged to its true master.
