Chapter 9 - Whispers in the Dark

Two weeks later, the estate had returned to a strange, almost surreal normality. The shattered glass of the rear French doors had been replaced, the mud in the garden raked smooth, and the financial ledgers scrubbed clean of every trace of Vivienne’s existence. Her name had been permanently erased from the title deeds, the bank accounts, and the security logs, as if she had never existed at all.

Adrian sat at his massive mahogany desk in the third-floor study, reviewing the final restructuring documents sent over by the federal prosecutors. The corporate takeover attempt had failed completely, leaving his holding company stronger and more consolidated than ever before.

His phone buzzed on the blotter.

It was an automated security alert from the front gate camera system.

Adrian frowned, clicking the live feed open.

The camera showed the heavy iron gates standing wide open. A sleek, unmarked black sedan was idling just outside the perimeter sensor range, its headlights turned completely off in the pitch-black night.

A single figure stepped out from the shadow of the brick pillar, walking slowly toward the intercom box at the edge of the drive. The figure wore a heavy black trench coat, the collar turned up against the wind, concealing their face entirely from the lens.

Adrian didn't flinch. He didn't reach for the panic button or call the federal detail. Instead, he stood up slowly from his desk, walked across the Persian rug, and opened the French doors leading out onto the second-floor balcony.

The night air was crisp and biting.

Down below, near the base of the grand stone fountain where the sprinklers were just beginning their automatic cycle, a massive shadow stirred from the flowerbeds.

Bruno stood up.

He didn't bark. He didn't groww. He simply stepped out from the shadows of the boxwood hedges, shaking the evening mist from his heavy coat, and turned his massive head toward the front gates.

The figure at the intercom hesitated, took one step backward toward the idling black car, and then slowly turned around and got back into the vehicle.

Seconds later, the sedan’s tires crunched softly against the asphalt as it reversed into the darkness and disappeared down the winding country road without a trace.

Adrian leaned against the wrought-iron railing of the balcony, watching the empty road with a cold, unwavering gaze.
