Chapter 20 - The Master of the House

The autumn rain returned by evening, drumming a steady, soothing rhythm against the thirty-two stone windows of the grand estate.

Adrian sat in his leather armchair by the roaring library fire, a glass of un-iced bourbon resting on the side table. The house was no longer a monument to paranoia or betrayal; it was a home again, secured by loyalty, vigilance, and unbreakable bonds.

Bruno lay stretched out across the Persian rug, his heavy head resting on his paws, his dark amber eyes reflecting the dancing flames of the hearth. Sofia was curled up fast asleep against his side, her small breathing completely in sync with the steady thrum of the mastiff's powerful heart.

Maria walked into the library, set a fresh plate of toasted bread and cheese on the low table, and looked down at the dog with a warm, knowing smile.

“He’s earned his retirement, hasn't he?” Maria asked quietly.

Adrian reached down, resting his palm against Bruno’s warm, thick neck, feeling the powerful muscle pulse beneath his fingers.

“He was never retired, Maria,” Adrian said, looking into the fire with a calm, absolute certainty. “He was just waiting for the right moment to remind everyone who really owns this house.”

He opened the leather journal on his lap, picked up his pen, and wrote the final entry of his story across the clean white page:

A house of stone can be breached, and men of greed can fall. But loyalty like yours, my old friend, is the only wall that never breaks.

He closed the book. Outside, the rain washed the world clean, and inside, the watch was finally over.
