Chapter 7 - The Confession Room

The master study smelled of aged leather, pipe tobacco, and impending doom. Federal agents had secured the perimeter, and the low hum of encrypted satellite uplinks filled the air as teams of forensic accountants dismantled the shell corporations Marcus and Vivienne had spent two years constructing.

Marcus sat in a mahogany armchair, his hands cuffed tightly behind his back, shivering despite the roaring fire in the marble hearth. Vivienne sat across from him on the leather sofa, her cream sweater stained with mud, her hair loose and wild around her pale face. They wouldn’t look at each other. The fragile alliance built on greed and betrayal had completely shattered the moment the first federal badge was flashed in the foyer.

Adrian stood by the tall bay window, looking out over the misty lawn where Bruno was currently receiving a thorough medical checkup from the estate vet—though the massive mastiff looked entirely unbothered, gnawing happily on a prime rib-eye steak Maria had brought out on a silver platter.

The heavy oak door swung open, and the lead federal investigator stepped into the room, holding a thick stack of printed financial logs and encrypted flash drives.

“We have the complete mirror-image backup of the Zurich accounts,” the agent said, dropping the files onto the desk in front of Adrian. “Every transaction has been flagged, frozen, and reversed by international banking regulators. Vance-Galloway Enterprises has been liquidated. They’re completely broke.”

Vivienne let out a sharp, hysterical laugh that quickly dissolved into a sob. She looked up at Adrian, her eyes wide and desperate. “You can’t do this, Adrian. We’re engaged! We share a life!”

Adrian turned slowly from the window. He looked at her not with anger, but with a profound, chilling indifference that hurt worse than any blow.

“You shared my house, Vivienne,” Adrian said quietly. “You shared my table. But the moment you decided to dispose of my dog like trash to steal what wasn't yours, you became nothing more than an uninvited guest who overstayed her welcome.”

Marcus buried his face in his cuffed hands, weeping softly as two federal agents stepped forward, grabbed him by the shoulders, and hauled him toward the door.

Vivienne was next. As the agents pulled her to her feet, she glared at Adrian with pure venom. “You think you’ve won? People like us don't just disappear, Adrian. The syndicate will come back. They always come back.”

“Let them,” Adrian replied calmly. “I have a very good guard dog.”
