CHAPTER 7 — The Skeleton With the Silver Ring

The abandoned warehouse had been empty for nearly two decades.

Or so everyone believed.

As demolition crews tore through the cracked concrete floor, one worker's shovel struck solid steel.

"Stop!"

Federal agents rushed forward.

Beneath the warehouse was a narrow staircase leading to a hidden underground room no one had known existed.

Dust filled the air.

Rusted chains hung from the walls.

A broken hospital bed stood in one corner.

Daniel felt his stomach tighten.

The old man froze in the doorway.

"I remember this place..."

His voice trembled.

"This is where they kept him."

Investigators searched every inch of the room until one agent noticed loose bricks behind the bed.

He pulled them away.

Behind them was a small metal box.

Inside lay three objects:

A cassette tape.

A leather wallet.

And a silver wedding ring engraved with two initials.

R & E.

Daniel immediately recognized it.

"My mother wore this ring every day..."

His knees nearly gave out.

"If this is here..."

"...then my mother knew everything."

Before anyone could process the discovery, forensic experts uncovered something even more horrifying beneath the concrete floor.

Human remains.

The chairman, now sitting in handcuffs upstairs, smiled for the first time in hours.

"You'll never know whose skeleton that is."

Daniel turned pale.

The old man stared at the bones...

Then slowly whispered,

"No..."

"It can't be."

The lead investigator looked up from the evidence.

"The victim suffered a gunshot wound..."

"...but the skull doesn't match Richard Sterling's dental records."

Everyone stopped breathing.

May you like

If the skeleton wasn't Daniel's father...

Then who had been buried beneath the warehouse for twenty-five years?
