Chapter 1 - The Silver SpoonThe champagne flute in Vanessa’s hand looked innocent enough. Refracted through the crystal, the golden bubbles caught the amber glare of the chandeliers, sparkling like diamonds.

To the rest of the ballroom, it was a toast to eternal love. To Graham, standing there with the child's silent warning still echoing in his mind, it looked like a loaded weapon.
“You’re pale, darling,” Vanessa murmured, her manicured fingers brushing lightly against the lapel of his tailored tuxedo. Her touch, usually a source of grounding warmth, now felt like the glide of a cold reptile.
“I’m fine,” Graham managed, keeping his voice steady through sheer force of will. The mechanical hum in his ears suddenly spiked, a shrill reminder of the invisible cage he had been living in for four months. “Just... thinking about the acquisition numbers for next quarter.”
Vanessa laughed, a silvery sound that drew approving glances from a group of venture capitalists nearby. “You never switch off, do you? That’s why I love you. But tonight, you belong to me.”
She raised the glass to her lips, took a slow sip, and then—with a calculated, theatrical grace—extended it toward him.
“Drink with me, Graham. To our future.”
Graham looked down at the rim of the glass. Just a fraction of a millimeter away from the golden liquid, her lipstick left a faint, perfectly shaped crimson crescent. He thought of little Lily hidden behind the velvet curtain, of the frantic, desperate movements of those tiny hands spelling out a nightmare: Pretty lady. Your cup. Medicine.
“In a moment,” Graham said, forcing a tight, convincing smile. He gently placed his hand over hers, sliding the glass away from his mouth without spilling a drop. “I need to check on the catering staff. The chef forgot to bring out the vintage port I requested.”
Vanessa’s eyes flickered, just for a split second, with a cold, analytical sharpness that vanished almost as quickly as it appeared. “Don't be long, my love. The photographers want us by the lake for the midnight portraits.”
“I won’t be.”
Graham turned and walked away into the churning crowd, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. He didn't head for the kitchen. Instead, he slipped through a side corridor toward his private study, his mind racing through a maze of horrifying realizations.
If Vanessa was poisoning him, why?
Mercer Ridge Technologies was a multi-billion-dollar empire, but their prenuptial agreement was ironclad. She wouldn't get a dime of his primary assets in a divorce.
