Chapter 5 - The Ledger of Sins“You arrogant bastard,” Vanessa spat, her immaculate facade shattering in an instant. The sweet, adoring fiancée was gone, replaced by a cold, calculating stranger whose eyes burned with pure malice.

The two hundred guests recoiled in horror, whispering frantically among themselves as the reality of the situation set in. Cameras zoomed in from every angle, broadcasting the spectacle live to news outlets across the country.
Agent Vance stepped between them, his hand resting near his sidearm. “Ms. Vanessa Hale, you are being detained for questioning regarding the administration of a Class-A restricted neurotoxin—Thallium—to Mr. Graham Mercer, as well as suspected embezzlement from Mercer Ridge Technologies.”
“Prove it!” Vanessa screamed, her voice losing its melodic composure, turning shrill and desperate. “He’s paranoid! He’s losing his mind, his doctors said he’s unstable—!”
“She’s right about one thing,” a calm, steady voice interrupted from the doorway.
Everyone turned. Stepping into the ballroom was Marcus Vance, Graham’s chief corporate counsel and head of legal operations, accompanied by two local police detectives. In Marcus’s hands was a heavy, leather-bound ledger.
“Graham couldn't have proven it alone,” Marcus said, walking straight up to the federal agent and handing over the ledger. “Not while she was slowly destroying his cognitive functions week by week. But thankfully, forensic accountants don't rely on memory.”
Marcus turned his gaze toward Vanessa, a grim smile touching his lips.
“While you were busy planning your dream wedding, Vanessa, you made one fatal mistake: you hired offshore shell companies registered in the Cayman Islands to purchase the thallium shipments. Unfortunately for you, those exact same shell companies were flagged by our corporate security bots six months ago when you tried to short-sell Mercer Ridge stock before a planned hostile takeover.”
Vanessa’s knees wobbled. She grabbed the edge of a nearby cocktail table, knocking over a tray of glasses that shattered on the floor.
“That’s... that’s a lie,” she breathed, her chest heaving. “You fabricated those documents!”
“We didn't have to,” Marcus replied smoothly, opening the leather ledger to a marked page. “We found this exact physical ledger hidden behind the false bottom of your walk-in closet, complete with your personal handwriting, tracking every single dose administered to his morning smoothies, every drop slipped into his evening wine, and the projected date of his total incapacitation.”
Agent Vance glanced at the ledger, then nodded to the tactical officers behind him. “Cuff her.”
Two officers stepped forward. Vanessa thrashed, her silver evening gown tearing as she fought against them.
“You can’t do this to me!” she shrieked, her voice echoing off the crystal chandeliers as they dragged her toward the exit. “Graham! You’ll rot without me! You hear me?! You’re nothing without me!”

The heavy oak doors slammed shut behind her, cutting off her screams.
Silence descended upon the ballroom once more—a heavy, suffocating stillness broken only by the crackle of the security radios.
