Chapter 4 - The Trap is SetBack in the ballroom, the atmosphere had reached a fever pitch of celebratory excess. Waiters poured vintage champagne, laughter echoed off the limestone pillars, and the string quartet had been replaced by a live jazz band.

Vanessa was holding court near the indoor fountain, laughing brightly as a prominent senator praised her taste in event planning.

When she saw Graham approach, her face lit up with a radiant, almost predatory affection.

“There you are,” she purred, slipping her arm through his. “Everyone is wondering when we’re going to cut the cake. The pastry chef created a four-tier masterpiece with spun sugar swans.”

“Let’s do it,” Graham said, his voice entirely devoid of warmth, though his smile masked it well enough for the casual observer. “Let’s give them a night they’ll never forget.”

Ten minutes later, the lights in the grand ballroom dimmed. A spotlight cut through the darkness, illuminating the towering white-and-silver wedding cake wheeled out by the head pastry chef.

A collective murmur of awe swept through the two hundred guests.

Vanessa stood beside Graham, holding a silver-plated cake knife decorated with white roses. Her hand rested over his on the handle.

“Make a wish, darling,” she whispered, leaning close to his ear.

“I already have,” Graham replied quietly.

He looked out over the crowd. Through the floor-to-ceiling glass doors leading to the drive, he saw the flashing red and blue lights of three unmarked federal SUVs pulling silently onto the estate grounds.

Simultaneously, the live band music cut off with a sharp screech of feedback.

The main ballroom doors swung open with a resounding bang.

Four men in dark suits and tactical gear marched into the room, led by a tall, broad-shouldered man wearing a federal badge on his belt.

The murmurs instantly died. The entire room fell into a stunned, suffocating silence.

Vanessa’s hand froze on the knife. Her smile flickered, replaced by a sudden, sharp edge of confusion. “What is the meaning of this? This is a private event—security!”

The lead agent ignored her entirely, his eyes locking onto Graham. He stepped forward and flashed a digital tablet.

“Mr. Graham Mercer?”

“Yes,” Graham said clearly, stepping away from Vanessa and releasing the cake knife.

“I am Agent Vance, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Cyber Crimes and Special Investigations Division,” the agent announced, his voice carrying clearly across the silent ballroom. “We have a warrant to secure this premises and detain individuals of interest in connection with an ongoing federal probe into industrial espionage, corporate sabotage, and premeditated attempted murder.”

Gasps erupted from the crowd. Cameras flashed as panicked reporters—who had snuck past security blocks—began recording from the edges of the room.

Vanessa’s face drained of all color. The silver cake knife slipped from her fingers, clattering loudly against the marble floor.

“This is a mistake,” Vanessa hissed, her voice rising in panic as she stepped toward the agent. “My fiancé is one of the most powerful tech executives in the country! You have no right—Graham, tell them! Tell them this is insane!”

Graham turned slowly to face her. The ringing in his ears was completely gone now, replaced by absolute, chilling clarity.

“It’s not a mistake, Vanessa,” Graham said, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceiling. “In fact, it’s the most accurate thing that’s happened all night.”
