My children, Nicole and Liam, stood close to me, their shoulders trembling with a mix of shock, grief, and a newly forged fury. My mind, however, was anchored three hours away at an isolated facility called Blackwood Sanctuary.

My brother, Daniel. Alive. Or at least, he had been breathing as of Gertrude’s last check-in.
"Mom, we’re going with you," Nicole said, her voice hard, mirroring the exact steel I felt forming inside my own ribs.
"No," I replied, shaking my head as I slipped my car keys from my purse. My wedding ring was gone, left back on the dining room table beside the divorce papers, but the silver key Gertrude had pressed into my palm still felt ice-cold against my thumb. "This is something I have to start alone. But I want you to meet Elaine at the precinct. Make sure Christopher has no access to any bail bonds or hidden assets."
The drive north was a blur of autumn mist and relentless rain against the windshield. Every mile marker felt like peeling back layers of a false reality I had lived in for over two decades. Christopher had constructed a glass castle out of stolen money, forged signatures, and bones.
