The corporate sign outside the massive downtown headquarters of Hayes Meridian Properties had been scrubbed clean. A new bronze plaque hung beside the front glass doors, bearing a new name: Hayes & Co. Holdings – Founded on Truth.

Inside my new corner office on the top floor, I stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, looking out over the city skyline. My phone buzzed on the mahogany desk. It wasn't a call from an evasive husband or an angry executive. It was a text from Nicole, asking if Uncle Daniel wanted to join us for Sunday dinner.

On the mantelpiece behind my desk sat a small white urn containing Gertrude’s ashes. Beside it rested the tiny silver key, no longer hidden in a purse or a bank box, but proudly displayed on a velvet cushion.

Christopher was currently facing three consecutive life sentences in a maximum-security federal penitentiary, with no chance of parole and no fortune left to buy his way out. Vanessa was now the vice president of corporate compliance, working side by side with me to rebuild everything her father and I had lost.

Daniel was recovering in a bright, sunlit room in our family home, his voice growing stronger every single day as he relearned how to speak, laugh, and live without fear.
