Chapter 7 - The Return to the CityWe didn't wait. We wrapped Daniel in a thick wool blanket, transferred him carefully into the passenger seat of my sedan, and drove straight back toward the city under the cover of a torrential midnight downpour.

Vanessa drove her own car right behind us, carrying the audio tapes, journals, and financial ledgers.
By the time we pulled up to Elaine Porter’s downtown law office at 3:00 AM, the building was still ablaze with light. Federal agents in dark suits stood in the lobby, alongside Nicole and Liam, who looked exhausted and pale.
When Nicole saw the front passenger door of my car open and watched me help a frail, silver-haired man out of the vehicle, she froze.
"Mom... who is that?" she asked, her voice cracking.
"That," I said, holding back tears as I pulled my brother’s arm over my shoulder, "is your Uncle Daniel. The man your father told you died before you were born."
Liam stepped forward, his eyes widening in recognition as he looked at Daniel’s face—seeing the exact same family features etched into his aging frame. "He... he's alive?"
"He's alive," I said firmly. "And your father is about to find out what happens when you cross the entire Hayes family."

We brought Daniel inside, setting him up in Elaine’s private conference room with a warm cup of tea and a blanket. Elaine herself walked in holding a thick stack of preliminary arraignment papers.
"Christopher is currently being held at the federal detention center without bail," Elaine announced, her expression grim but triumphant. "His initial hearing is scheduled for nine o'clock this morning. But Rosalyn... he's already talking. And he's claiming that you were the mastermind behind the entire embezzlement scheme."
