Chapter 9 - The Courtroom ShowdownThe federal courtroom was packed to capacity. Reporters, corporate board members, and curious onlookers whispered amongst themselves as the bailiff banged his gavel.

"All rise for the Honorable Judge Thomas Vance."

Christopher was led in through the side door. He didn't look like the confident, polished real estate mogul who had barked orders at me over the phone from an island resort. His hair was messy, his orange jumpsuit hung loosely over his frame, and his eyes darted frantically around the room.

Then he saw me sitting in the front row, flanked by Nicole, Liam, Vanessa, and—sitting upright in a wheelchair with a blanket across his lap—Daniel Hayes.

Christopher stopped dead in his tracks. Color drained entirely from his face. His mouth opened, but no sound came out. He stared at Daniel as if he were looking back at a corpse rising from the deep ocean floor.

"Sit down, Mr. Hayes," the bailiff ordered sharply, shoving Christopher into his seat beside his public defender.

Judge Vance adjusted his glasses, looking down at the massive stack of files before him. "We are here for the arraignment of Christopher Hayes on charges of grand larceny, wire fraud, identity theft, kidnapping, and attempted murder."

Christopher’s lawyer stood up immediately, sweating profusely. "Your Honor, my client maintains his innocence. The financial discrepancies are entirely the responsibility of—"

"Save it, Counselor," Judge Vance interrupted, his voice booming through the courtroom. He held up a certified document bearing Gertrude Hayes’s signature and the federal seal. "The court has received verified forensic evidence, bank records from safe-deposit box 317, and a sworn deposition from the primary victim of the 2002 assault—Mr. Daniel Hayes."

A collective gasp swept through the gallery. Flashbulbs from media cameras hiding in the back clicked furiously.

Christopher lunged across the defense table, his voice cracking with panic. "It’s a conspiracy! My wife—Rosalyn orchestrated this! She manipulated my mother on her deathbed!"

Judge Vance slammed his gavel down twice. Bang! Bang!

"Silence, Mr. Hayes! You have no estate, no company, and no leverage." The judge looked directly down at me, then back at Christopher. "Furthermore, the court accepts the amended probate filing transferring all corporate control of Hayes Meridian Properties to Rosalyn Hayes."
