Chapter 4 - The Niece in the ShadowsBefore I could answer, a soft click came from the dark corner of the room near the bathroom door.

I spun around, my heart hammering against my ribs.

Stepping out from the shadows was Vanessa Cole.

She wasn't wearing her expensive Miami marketing outfits or the glamorous dresses from the island resort. She wore a simple black turtleneck and dark jeans. But there was no fear on her face—only a cold, calculated calm that mirrored Gertrude’s most calculating moments.

"You're late, Aunt Rosalyn," Vanessa said quietly.

I scrambled to my feet, placing my body between my vulnerable brother and the woman who had supposedly been my husband’s mistress. "What is this? Were you sleeping with him, or was that just another one of Christopher’s sick games?"

Vanessa let out a dry, humorless chuckle. She walked over to the nightstand, picked up a heavy manila folder, and tossed it onto the bed.

"Sleeping with Christopher Hayes?" Vanessa sneered, a flash of pure venom crossing her features. "I would rather swallow broken glass. Do you have any idea what it’s like to look at the man who murdered your grandfather, stole your father’s life, and locked him away like an animal, and pretend to flirt with him just to get his fingerprints on a glass?"

The room seemed to tilt. "Grandfather? What are you talking about?"

"Christopher didn't just steal Hayes Meridian from Daniel," Vanessa said, stepping closer, her eyes flashing with unshed tears. "He pushed my father off that boat twenty-four years ago. And when Gertrude found out—because she always knew—she didn't turn him in. She protected her golden-boy son. But she made a deal with him: Daniel would live, hidden away, and Christopher would fund this facility forever."

"And you?" I asked, staring at her in disbelief. "If you're Daniel's daughter... why did you get involved with Christopher?"

"Because Gertrude couldn't bring herself to destroy her own son," Vanessa said bitterly. "So she found me three years ago. She gave me the blueprints, the bank routing numbers, and the instructions on how to reel Christopher in. We weren't having an affair, Aunt Rosalyn. We were setting a trap."
