Chapter 1 - The Gathering StormThe Chicago autumn air bit sharply against my skin as my private towncar glided past the wrought-iron gates of The Grandview Estate. Eight days had passed since I answered Adrian’s gloating phone call from a hospital bed. Eight days of pumping breast milk into sterile bottles, securing the best forensic accountants money could buy, and tailoring a custom sapphire-blue Dolce & Gabbana gown that draped over my postpartum frame with terrifying, effortless elegance.

In the bassinet secured safely in the back seat beside me, baby Lily slept soundly, swaddled in silk, unaware that her mother was about to blow up a multi-million-dollar empire.

My phone buzzed against my thigh. It was a text from Marcus, my lead investigator: “All subpoenas have been formally served to the venue coordinator, the caterers, and the primary corporate sponsor—Apex Horizon Holdings. The local magistrate is on standby. Walk into that lion's den, Mia. Take everything back.”

I locked my phone and took a slow, deep breath.

Adrian thought I was coming as the broken, discarded ex-wife he could humiliate in front of Chicago’s elite. He had no idea that the barren woman he cast aside was now a ruthless mother holding a match to the powder keg of his entire existence.
