Chapter 1 - THE MAN WHO BROKE THE EMPIREThe Gathering Storm in ManhattanThe chill of the November wind sweeping off the Hudson River carried the unmistakable scent of ozone and impending chaos. Inside the glass-and-steel monolith of Vale Tower on the sixty-eighth floor, the atmosphere was even colder.

Sebastian Vale stood at the floor-to-ceiling window, a tumbler of amber bourbon untouched in his hand. His knuckles were white against the crystal. Below him, the twinkling lights of Manhattan looked like a circuit board he could control with a single command. But for the first time in his life, his empire felt entirely out of reach.
Four hours had passed since his encounter with Maya at Bethesda Terrace. Four hours since he looked into the gray eyes of his four-year-old son—a mirror image of every Vale man, including himself—and realized that his entire existence for the past four years had been built on a foundation of calculated, ruthless lies.
The door to his private office swung open without a knock. Marcus Vance, his chief of security and the man who had served the Vale family through three generations of blood, coups, and corporate warfare, stepped inside.
“You wanted to see me, Mr. Vale?” Marcus’s voice was as flat and unreadable as ever.
Sebastian didn’t turn around. He took a slow, measured breath, letting the burn of the alcohol sit on his tongue before speaking.
“Four years ago,” Sebastian said, his voice terrifyingly quiet, “my grandfather told me that Maya Sterling had taken a payoff and skipped the country. He told me she signed the annulment papers without a word, that she never wanted to see a Vale again.”
Marcus shifted his weight. “The Old Man was looking out for the dynasty. Maya Sterling was an orphan with no pedigree. She didn’t fit the profile required for the future Mrs. Sebastian Vale.”
Sebastian turned slowly. His eyes were completely devoid of warmth—the look that made Wall Street executives and underground syndicates alike tremble.
“She was pregnant, Marcus. With triplets.”
Marcus didn’t flinch, but a fraction of a second’s hesitation betrayed him. “That is… unfortunate. But gossip on the street—”
“She went to Vale Tower at five months pregnant,” Sebastian interrupted, cutting across him like a razor. “Your security detail turned her away. She called my private line. She wrote letters. Every single one of them vanished into the administrative black hole of this building.”
Sebastian slammed the crystal tumbler onto the mahogany desk. The glass cracked, amber liquid spilling like blood across the dark wood.
“You’ve been head of security for twenty years. Nothing enters or leaves this tower without your authorization. Did my grandfather order her erased, or did you?”
Marcus straightened his posture, his eyes hardening. “The patriarch gave direct orders to protect the bloodline from external contamination. At the time, you were negotiating the merger that secured our European holdings. A scandal involving a penniless college graduate would have cost us billions. The Old Man did what was necessary.”
Sebastian closed the distance between them in three long strides. Before Marcus could react, Sebastian grabbed him by the lapels of his bespoke Italian suit, slamming him against the reinforced glass wall. The impact rattled the window frames sixty-eight stories above the street.
“You denied me my children,” Sebastian whispered, his voice trembling with a rage so deep it bordered on the supernatural. “You made me believe the only woman I ever loved sold our marriage for a check she never even received. You stole four years of my life, my children's first steps, their first words...”
Sebastian’s grip tightened until Marcus’s face began to flush. “And now, you talk to me about corporate mergers?”
“Mr. Vale…” Marcus choked out, gasping for air. “If you declare war on your own family over a woman and three bastards, the board will invoke the emergency succession clause. Your cousin Julian is waiting in the wings. He’ll tear the empire apart before nightfall.”

Sebastian slowly released him, letting Marcus stumble forward and cough. Sebastian adjusted his cuffs, his expression chillingly composed once more.
“Let Julian try,” Sebastian said softly. “Let him think he has the upper hand. Because starting tonight, the Vale family is going to learn what happens when you steal from a dragon.”
