Chapter 4 - THE ALLIANCE OF EXILESCoffee and Conspiracies in Park SlopeInside the warm, brightly lit kitchen of Maya’s Brooklyn brownstone, the tension was of an entirely different kind.

Maya had finally let Sebastian inside—not because she trusted him, but because the neighbors were starting to stare at the lone man standing guard outside her door like a gargoyle. She sat at the small wooden kitchen table, a mug of black coffee steaming between her palms, while Sebastian sat opposite her, looking completely out of place against the modest floral wallpaper and children's drawings taped to the refrigerator.
“You’re telling me your grandfather forged the bank statements and ordered Marcus to block every attempt I made to reach you?” Maya asked, her voice dangerously calm.
“Yes,” Sebastian said, leaning forward, resting his elbows on the table. “He wanted me focused entirely on the European conglomerate merger. He believed marrying an orphan without backing would weaken our market position.”
“And you just went along with it?” Maya’s eyes flashed with lingering resentment. “You didn't even investigate? You didn't drive down here yourself?”
“I was told you took the five million and fled to Europe under an assumed name,” Sebastian said, his voice raw. “The private investigator my grandfather hired even provided passport stamps. It was airtight, Maya. They manufactured an entire alternate reality.”
Maya looked down at her coffee. She remembered the day she went to Vale Tower—how the security guards physically threw her onto the freezing concrete sidewalk, telling her that Mr. Sebastian Vale had already filed for annulment and never wanted to see her face again. She remembered sitting in a diner on 3rd Avenue, crying until her chest hurt, realizing she was entirely alone in the world with three lives growing inside her.
“Four years, Sebastian,” she whispered. “Four years of waking up in the middle of the night with three sick babies, no money, no safety net, wondering if someone from your family was going to show up and take them away from me.”
Sebastian reached across the table, his fingers hovering just an inch from her hand, not daring to touch her without permission.
“I am going to destroy them,” Sebastian said softly. “Every single person who had a hand in this. My grandfather, Marcus, the board members who signed off on the cover-up. I’m going to strip them of every share, every title, and every dollar.”
Maya looked up, meeting his gaze. “And what about the children? You think you can just waltz in here and be Dad?”
“No,” Sebastian said immediately, his voice steady. “I don't expect anything. I know I have to earn it. But I won't let my grandfather touch them. As of tonight, Vale Tower is locked down, and my security team is stationed around this building. Nobody gets near you or the kids without going through me first.”
Before Maya could reply, a soft rustling sound came from the hallway doorway.
They both turned.
Small footsteps padded across the hardwood floor. Owen stood there rubbing his eyes, clutching his battered toy dog in one hand. He looked past Maya and stared straight at Sebastian with those unmistakable gray Vale eyes.
“Mommy?” Owen’s small voice piped up. “Who’s that tall man?”
Sebastian’s breath caught in his throat. He slowly stood up from the chair, kneeling down to Owen’s eye level. He didn't rush forward; he gave the little boy all the space in the world.
“Hi, Owen,” Sebastian said, his voice cracking slightly. “I’m a friend of your mom’s.”
Owen walked closer, tilting his head. He looked at Sebastian’s dark hair, his jawline, and then back up into his eyes.
“You look like the man in my picture book,” Owen observed innocently. “The one with the lion crown.”

Sebastian let out a broken, watery chuckle, a tear finally escaping his eye and cutting a path down his cheek. “Yeah, buddy. Something like that.”
Maya watched them, her heart twisting in her chest. She realized then that no matter how much she wanted to keep building walls, the battle lines had already been drawn. And the Vale family was about to find out what happens when you awaken a sleeping giant.
