Chapter 1 - THE MAN BEHIND THE MARBLE

Julian Thorne, the man who stood in the shadows of the dining room, was a ghost in his own life. At forty-five, he was one of the wealthiest men in the city, a titan of industry whose name graced skyscrapers. Yet, on this Christmas Eve, his only company was the silence.

When he heard the little girl’s voice—“There’s nothing at home”—something dormant in his chest flickered. He stepped into the light. He saw the mother, Jenna, pale and trembling, shielding her child as if he were a threat. He saw the desperation in their eyes, the kind of hunger that couldn't be satisfied by a single meal.

"Stay," Julian repeated, his voice raspy from disuse. "Please. I didn't hire a chef to cook for an empty room."

Jenna hesitated, her pride fighting her survival instinct. "Sir, I am just the cleaner. I don't want to overstep."

"I am the one overstepping, Ms. Carter," Julian said, gesturing to the table. "I haven't had a guest in five years. You would be doing me the favor."

As they sat, the atmosphere was thick with tension. Jenna watched Daisy eat with a ravenous speed that made Julian’s heart ache. He realized then that he had spent years obsessing over market shares, completely blind to the reality of the people who actually built his world. He watched Jenna—her hands were raw, her expression guarded. He noticed the way she moved, with a quiet strength that reminded him of someone he had lost long ago.

As the meal progressed, Julian asked questions he had never asked before. Why was she working on Christmas Eve? How had she fallen so far? Jenna opened up, telling him about the layoff, the medical debt for her mother, and the eviction notice hanging over her head.

"I don't need charity," she said, her voice firm.

"It's not charity," Julian replied, his eyes dark with a hidden sorrow. "It's a trade. I need someone to help me remember how to live in this house. You need a place to belong. But there is a condition."

May you like

Jenna frowned. "What condition?"

"That you stay. Not just tonight. Until you are back on your feet."
