Chapter 2 - THE SHADOWS OF THE PAST

The following days were a whirlwind. Julian moved Jenna and Daisy into the guest suite, a room larger than their entire old apartment. But the mansion held secrets.
Jenna began to find them—locked doors in the basement, photographs hidden in a safe in the study, and a set of nursery furniture covered in dust sheets in a wing of the house that was strictly off-limits.
One night, while Julian was away on business, a woman arrived at the front door. She was impeccably dressed, cold, and possessed a razor-sharp tongue. "Who are you?" she demanded, looking at Jenna as if she were a stain on the carpet. "And where is my brother?"
"I'm Jenna," she replied, holding her ground. "And Mr. Thorne is out."
The woman, Eleanor, sneered. "I’m Julian’s sister. And you are just the help. Do not get comfortable. Julian is playing a game of 'saviour,' but he’s still the man who walked away when things got hard. He won't keep you for long."

When Julian returned, the tension was palpable. He didn't defend Jenna; he simply told Eleanor to leave. But that night, the house felt colder. Jenna confronted him. "Who are you really, Julian? Why is there a nursery for a child that doesn't exist? Why does your family hate you?"
Julian turned away, his silhouette framed by the moonlight. "Because I didn't lose my family, Jenna. I destroyed them."
