Chapter 10 - The Final Reckoning

Warehouse 4 was a massive, cavernous steel structure echoing with the sound of dripping water and howling winter wind off Lake Michigan.

Victor and I moved through the shadows like phantoms, our footsteps completely silent against the concrete floor. Around us, ten of Salvatore’s remaining loyalists patrolled the perimeter, rifles slung over their shoulders, completely unaware of the death walking toward them.

"On my count," Victor whispered against my ear, his breath warm in the freezing air. "Three. Two. One."

We moved as one.

Before the guards could even raise their weapons, Victor dropped the first two with silent, brutal efficiency, using a combat knife with ruthless precision. I pivoted to the left, leveling my silver pistol at a third man who spun around in surprise.

BANG.

The gunshot echoed off the corrugated metal walls like thunder. The man dropped instantly, clutching his leg with a cry of agony.

Suddenly, floodlights blazed on overhead, blinding us in a harsh, glaring white glare.

"Well, well, well!" a raspy, vengeful voice shouted from the upper gantry.

We looked up. There stood Salvatore, looking older, thinner, and utterly deranged, holding a heavy-caliber rifle aimed squarely down at Victor’s chest. Beside him, two armed thugs held a tied-up hostage—my brother, Liam, who had secretly flown back into town against all of Victor's warnings.

"Elena! No!" Liam screamed, struggling against his ropes. "Get out of here! It's a trap!"

"Shut him up!" Salvatore snarled, pressing the barrel of his gun against the side of Liam's head. He looked down at Victor with a manic, triumphant grin. "Drop your weapons, Victor! Drop them right now, or the girl's brother gets a bullet through his brain!"

My heart stopped. Liam was back. The brother I had sacrificed everything to protect was right in the crosshairs of a dying syndicate boss.

Victor’s hand slowly reached for his holster. His fingers hovered over his Beretta. His eyes locked onto Salvatore, calculating the distance, the angle, the wind speed—everything.

"Drop the gun, Victor," Salvatore taunted, his finger twitching nervously on the trigger. "Let's see how much your little maid loves you when her brother dies for your sins."

I didn't hesitate.

I didn't wait for Victor to make a move.

With blinding speed, I raised my silver pistol, took a deep, steady breath, closed my eyes for a fraction of a second to center my aim, and pulled the trigger.

BANG.

The bullet tore through the air, piercing the hand holding Salvatore's rifle with pinpoint accuracy. Salvatore shrieked in agony, dropping his weapon as blood spurted from his shattered wrist.

Before he could recover, Victor drew his Beretta and fired twice in rapid succession.

BANG. BANG.

Salvatore stumbled backward, crashing over the edge of the gantry and plunging thirty feet down onto the concrete floor below, completely motionless.

The remaining thugs dropped their weapons instantly, falling to their knees with their hands raised in the air as Paul and his enforcers swarmed into the warehouse, securing the perimeter in seconds.

Silence rushed back into the room, broken only by Liam’s frantic breathing from the upper gantry.

Victor lowered his gun, his chest heaving slightly. He turned slowly, looking at me with an expression of such raw, unfiltered awe and adoration that it took my breath away.

He didn't say a word. He simply closed the distance between us, wrapped his strong arms around my waist, and pulled me flush against his chest, burying his face in my hair.

"You never cease to amaze me, Elena," he whispered fiercely against my neck.

Liam rushed down the stairs, panting and wide-eyed, stopping a few feet away. "What... what just happened? Who are you people?!"

I pulled back from Victor just enough to look up into his dark, mesmerizing eyes, a genuine smile spreading across my face for the first time in my life.

"Meet my husband," I said softly, interlocking my fingers with Victor's scarred, powerful hand. "And welcome to our empire."
