Chapter 12 - Shadows in Zurich

We touched down at a private airstrip outside Zurich under a blanket of freezing alpine snow. Waiting on the tarmac were three black armored Mercedes-Maybachs and a detail of Swiss security operatives who saluted sharply as Victor stepped down the stairs first, shielding me from the biting wind.

Our destination was a secluded glass-and-steel chalet perched dramatically over the edge of Lake Lucerne. It was a fortress disguised as modern architectural minimalism, complete with state-of-the-art biometrics, bulletproof glass, and an underground vault that housed the syndicate's European holdings.

"Why Switzerland, Victor?" I asked later that evening, standing on the heated outdoor balcony wrapped in a heavy wool shawl as I watched the dark water ripple below.

Victor stepped out behind me, bringing a cup of spiced black tea and pressing it gently into my hands before wrapping his arms around my waist from behind.

"Because Chicago was where I built my cage," Victor murmured, resting his chin comfortably against my shoulder. "Europe is where we build our dynasty. Salvatore’s remnants are scattered, but a wounded snake still strikes. I brought you here to secure our perimeter before we dismantle the remaining cells in New York and London."

I leaned back into his solid, muscular frame, letting the familiar scent of woodsmoke and sandalwood wash away the lingering anxiety of the past months.

"I'm not afraid anymore," I whispered, turning my head to look up into his striking, dark eyes.

A slow, fierce smile touched the corners of Victor's mouth. He leaned down, capturing my lips in a slow, possessive kiss that tasted of quiet victory and absolute devotion.

Suddenly, the encrypted satellite phone buzzing sharply on the indoor glass table shattered the quiet moment.

Victor pulled back, his expression instantly shifting from a lover to a warlord. He strode inside, picking up the encrypted handset with practiced precision.

"Speak," Victor ordered.

Paul’s voice crackled through the speaker, laced with static and undeniable urgency. "Boss, we have a breach. Not in Chicago. In Zurich. Someone just bypassed the perimeter sensors at the lower dock."
