Chapter 16 - The Steel Mill Ambush

The heavy corrugated metal doors of the steel mill groaned as Victor kicked them open with explosive force.
Gunfire immediately erupted.
A hail of bullets shattered the concrete pillars around us, sending sparks and pulverized dust flying through the air. We dropped instantly behind an overturned industrial steel container, our hearts hammering against our ribs.
"Suppressing fire!" Victor shouted, leaning out and returning rapid, calculated shots from his Beretta. Two New York operatives dropped instantly from the gantry above.
I pivoted around the corner of the container, raising my silver pistol.
BANG. BANG.
Two more gunmen staggered and fell, their rifles clattering against the concrete floor.
"Moving!" Victor yelled, grabbing my hand and sprinting through the blinding haze of gunpowder smoke toward the central freight elevator.
We burst into the upper control room where Liam was tied securely to a steel chair, a gag wrapped tightly around his mouth, guarded by two heavy-set enforcers.
"Elena! Victor!" Liam muffled desperately against the tape.
The two guards spun around, leveling their assault rifles straight at our chests. Before they could squeeze the triggers, Victor threw his tactical knife with blinding speed. It buried itself straight into the throat of the first guard.
At the exact same moment, I fired my pistol, catching the second guard square in the shoulder, sending him crashing backward into the control panel.
The room fell deadly quiet, save for Liam’s heavy panting.
I rushed forward, ripping the tape off my brother's mouth and slicing through the ropes binding his wrists with Victor's pocket knife.
"Are you okay?" I demanded, frantically checking him for injuries.

"I'm—I'm fine, just bruised," Liam stammered, scrambling to his feet. "Franck... the head of the New York syndicate... he's downstairs in the smelting chamber. He has a detonator."
Victor’s face turned into stone. "He's trying to blow the entire mill with us inside."
