Chapter 8 - The Price of Power

The summit ended in absolute submission. By midnight, the estate was quiet again, but the atmosphere crackled with a different kind of energy—one charged with raw power, dominance, and an undeniable attraction that had been simmering beneath the surface since the moment I fell across Victor’s chest.
I stood on the expansive balcony of the master suite, watching the snow fall over the dark waters of Lake Michigan, a glass of champagne resting in my hand.
Soft footsteps approached from behind, followed by the familiar, comforting warmth of a heavy wool jacket draped gently over my bare shoulders.
"You'll catch a cold," Victor murmured, stepping up beside me and resting his hands on the stone railing.
"I've spent my whole life being cold, Victor," I replied softly, turning my head to look at his striking profile. "Working eighteen-hour shifts, scrubbing floors, worrying about Liam. Tonight... sitting at that table with those monsters... I didn't feel cold at all."
Victor turned to face me, his dark eyes searching mine in the moonlight. "Power changes people, Elena. Sometimes it corrupts them. Sometimes it sets them free."
"Which one am I?" I whispered, my heart hammering against my ribs.
Victor reached out, his warm fingers gently cupping my cheek, his thumb tracing the line of my jawline. The touch sent a shiver straight to my core.
"You're neither," Victor whispered, his face drawing dangerously close to mine. "You’re the only real thing in a world built on lies. From the moment you pressed your hands against my chest to stop the bleeding, you owned me, Elena. I just took this long to realize it."
My breath hitched. The distance between us vanished.

When Victor’s lips finally met mine, it wasn't gentle—it was fierce, possessive, and consuming, like a storm breaking after years of drought. My hands instinctively tangled in the lapels of his suit jacket, pulling him closer as the cold Chicago wind whipped around us, completely erasing the last remnants of my old life.
We were two broken souls forged in fire and blood, now bound together by something far more dangerous than debt or fear: absolute, unbreakable devotion.
