Chapter 2 - DEBTS OF THE DEAD

The Secret Hidden Under a Waitress's Scars That Could Topple a Billion-Dollar Syndicate! The shift ended at midnight.

Sophie changed out of her uniform in the cramped, damp basement of the restaurant, putting on her oversized worn coat. Her hands were shaking violently now. The adrenaline of the confrontation had faded, leaving behind only raw, gripping fear.

She walked out the back alley door into the pouring Manhattan rain, pulling her hood low. She needed to get to the subway. She needed to disappear.

"You walk fast for someone who hasn't eaten in two days."

The voice emerged from the darkness of the alley. Sophie froze.

A sleek, black armored Maybach sat idling at the curb, its headlights cutting through the heavy mist. Standing beside the open rear door was one of Alessandro's granite-faced bodyguards. But it wasn't the bodyguard who had spoken.

Alessandro Moretti stepped out of the shadows, holding a heavy black umbrella. He walked toward her, the heels of his bespoke leather shoes clicking rhythmically against the wet asphalt.

"Mr. Moretti," Sophie said, her breath fogging in the cold air. "I was just going home. If this is about the wine—"

"This is not about the wine, Sophie Dubois," Alessandro interrupted.

Hearing her real last name spoken aloud felt like a physical blow. Sophie took a step back, her back pressing against the cold brick wall of the alleyway. "My name is Sophie Martin. I don't know who—"

"Your father was Jean-Pierre Dubois," Alessandro said, his tone conversational, yet carrying a lethal edge. "The French Deputy Minister of Finance who vanished three years ago along with eighty million dollars of the Corsican Syndicate's money. The man who left his brilliant, Sorbonne-educated daughter to starve in the slums of New York while every hitman from Marseille to Brooklyn searched for her."

Sophie’s heart stopped. The rain poured around them, but in the alley, it felt like time had suspended.

"I don't have the money," Sophie whispered, her voice cracking. "My father died a debtor. He didn't steal that money—he was framed. He died in a ditch in Lyon, and I ran because they wanted to kill me too. I have nothing."

Alessandro stepped closer, his shadow completely swallowing her. He raised his gloved hand, gently lifting her chin with two fingers. His touch was surprisingly warm against her freezing skin.

"I know you don't have the cash, Sophie," he murmured, his dark eyes scanning her pale face. "But your father didn't just take the money. He took something much more valuable. He took the Livre Noir—the Black Ledger. It contains the names, bank accounts, and political connections of every major player in the European underworld. Including the people currently trying to muscle into my territory."

He leaned in closer, his breath warm against her ear.

"You have the key to that ledger, Sophie. And you are going to give it to me."
