Chapter 3 - A CONTRACT IN BLOOD

Why Alessandro Moretti Paid One Million Dollars Just to Hear Her Speak Again!Sophie stared at the mahogany desk in Alessandro's private penthouse suite.
The view of Central Park from the floor-to-ceiling windows was breathtaking, but Sophie could only focus on the document sitting in front of her.
AGREEMENT OF SERVICESParty A: Alessandro Moretti, Head of the Moretti Family.
Party B: Sophie Dubois.
Terms: Party B will translate, decode, and assist Party A in retrieving the Livre Noir.
Compensation: Full protection under the Moretti family, eradication of all back rent/debts, and a sum of $1,000,000 USD upon successful recovery.
"This is madness," Sophie said, looking up at Alessandro, who was pouring two glasses of scotch. "If the Corsicans find out I am working with you, they will burn this city down to get to me."
"They are already trying to burn it down," Alessandro said, handing her a glass. "They are smuggling weapons through my docks. They are bribing my politicians. The Livre Noir is the weapon I need to cut their heads off. You are the only one who can translate the cipher your father created."
"And if I refuse?"
Alessandro took a slow sip of his scotch. "Then I release a rumor. I let it slip to the Corsican scouts in Brooklyn that the lovely Sophie Dubois is serving soup at L’Étoile Noir. You wouldn't survive the night."
Sophie felt a cold laugh bubble up in her throat. "So, it's a choice between a slow death and a fast one."
"It's a choice between being a victim and being an ally," Alessandro corrected, his voice dropping to a gravelly, intimate register. "Work with me, Sophie. I will feed you. I will clothe you. I will protect you. And when this is over, you will be free. Truly free."
Sophie looked at the pen. She looked at her trembling hands—hands that had once played classical piano in Parisian estates, now calloused from scrubbing floors. She had spent three years running. She was tired of running.
She picked up the pen and signed her name in elegant cursive. Sophie Dubois.
Alessandro smiled—a rare, devastatingly handsome sight that made her chest tighten. "Excellent. Your first assignment begins tomorrow. We are going to a party."
Meanwhile, across town in a dimly lit VIP lounge, Camilla Russo sat opposite a man with a thick, scarred neck and a heavy French accent.
"She is a waitress," Camilla hissed, her eyes wild with jealousy and humiliation. "But Alessandro looked at her like she was royalty. He took her with him. Her name is Sophie."
The Frenchman froze, his glass stopping halfway to his mouth. His eyes turned deadly. "Sophie? Did she have honey-blonde hair? A scar on her collarbone?"

"Yes!" Camilla cried. "Who is she?"
The Frenchman smiled, revealing a row of gold-capped teeth. "She is the key to our empire. Tell me where they are, Camilla. And I will make sure you get your precious Don back... in a coffin."
