Chapter 5 - BETRAYAL AT MIDNIGHT

The Gunsmoke Confession That Changed the Fate of the Moretti Empire Forever! The safe house was a secluded, fortified cabin deep in the woods of upstate New York.

Alessandro sat at the kitchen table, his shirt torn, a bloody bandage wrapped around his shoulder. Sophie stood over him, her emerald gown stained with dirt and soot, her hands surprisingly steady as she stitched his wound with a needle and thread.

"You're good at this," Alessandro grunted, his jaw clenching as she pulled a stitch tight.

"My father's associates weren't known for their peaceful negotiations," Sophie said softly. "I had to patch him up more than once."

They had escaped the Plaza Gala by the skin of their teeth. The attackers were Corsican mercs, but they had inside information. They knew exactly where Alessandro’s security would be weak.

"There is a mole," Alessandro said, his eyes burning with fury. "Only five people knew our security routing for the gala. One of them sold us out."

"It was Camilla," Sophie said quietly.

Alessandro shook his head. "Camilla is stupid, vindictive, and shallow—but she doesn't have the connections to coordinate a military-grade ambush with the Corsicans. Someone else used her."

Suddenly, the heavy oak door of the cabin creaked open.

Standing in the doorway, soaked in rain, was Marc—Alessandro’s most trusted underboss, the man who had served the Moretti family for fifteen years. Behind him stood three armed men, their rifles pointed directly at Alessandro and Sophie.

"You're right, boss," Marc said, stepping into the cabin with a cold, mocking smile. "Camilla was just a useful idiot. She thought she was just getting rid of her rival. She didn't realize she was helping me clear the chessboard."

Alessandro didn't flinch. He sat perfectly still, his dark eyes locked on his old friend. "Why, Marc? I gave you everything."

"You gave me scraps!" Marc spat. "The Corsicans offered me half of the shipping ports and a seat at the table in Paris. All they wanted was the girl and the ledger. And now, I have both."

Marc raised his gun, aiming it directly at Alessandro's head. "Any last words, Don Moretti?"

"Just one," Sophie whispered.

Before Marc could react, Sophie slammed her hand under the kitchen table, pulling the trigger of the compact Glock Alessandro had taped underneath earlier.

BANG!

The bullet shattered Marc’s kneecap. He screamed, collapsing to the floor. In a flash, Alessandro lunged forward despite his injury, grabbing his own gun from the table and firing three rapid shots. The three bodyguards collapsed before they could even raise their weapons.

The cabin fell silent, save for the sound of Marc's agonizing groans.

Alessandro stood over his former friend, his face a mask of absolute, terrifying coldness. He looked down at the bleeding traitor, then turned his gaze to Sophie, who stood with her gun still raised, her chest heaving.

"You saved my life," Alessandro said, a hint of genuine awe in his voice.

"You paid me a million dollars to keep you alive, Moretti," Sophie breathed, her eyes locked on his. "I'm just protecting my investment."
