Chapter 4 - SOCIETY’S WORST NIGHTMARE

The High-Society Trap That Backfired in the Most Explosive Way Possible! The grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was a sea of glittering diamonds, silk gowns, and hidden daggers. The annual Metropol Gala was the one night of the year where New York’s high society and high-level criminals mingled under the guise of charity.

When the double doors opened, a collective gasp swept through the crowd.

Alessandro Moretti entered, but he was not alone. On his arm was a woman who looked like she had been sculpted from starlight.

Sophie wore an emerald-green silk gown that clung flawlessly to her curves. Her honey-blonde hair was pinned up in an elegant French twist, exposing her slender neck and the delicate emerald necklace Alessandro had gifted her. The tired, hollow look in her eyes had been replaced by a quiet, lethal confidence.

"My, my," Alessandro whispered, leaning down toward her. "The waitress cleans up beautifully."

"Don't get used to it, Moretti," Sophie murmured back, keeping her smile fixed for the flashing cameras. "My father taught me that the most beautiful snakes are always the most venomous."

"I like snakes," Alessandro replied, his dark eyes flashing with amusement.

As they moved through the crowd, Sophie spotted Camilla Russo standing near the champagne fountain. Camilla’s eyes widened in sheer, unadulterated shock. She looked at Sophie’s dress, her jewels, her posture—and her face twisted with a venomous rage.

Camilla marched over, blocking their path. "Alessandro! What is the meaning of this? You bring a... a servant to the Plaza? A girl who washes dishes?"

Several high-society onlookers stopped to whisper, their eyes darting between Sophie and Camilla.

"Is there a problem, Camilla?" Alessandro asked, his voice dropping to an icy, warning tone.

"The problem is she doesn't belong here!" Camilla loudly declared, wanting to humiliate Sophie in front of everyone. "She is a fraud! A common thief! She's probably wearing stolen jewelry right now!"

Sophie did not flinch. She took a step forward, looking down at Camilla with the absolute disdain of a true aristocrat.

"Camilla," Sophie said, her voice clear and carrying across the ballroom. "Your insecurity is showing. It is almost as loud as that cheap synthetic dye in your dress. If you spent half as much time educating your mind as you do chasing men who despise you, you might have realized that my family funded the very foundation this hotel was built on. Now, step aside before I have you removed for being public nuisance."

The crowd murmured in shock. Camilla’s face went pale, then red. She opened her mouth to scream, but before she could speak, the massive glass dome of the ballroom shattered.

Screams echoed through the hall as heavy gunfire erupted from the mezzanine.

"Down!" Alessandro roared, throwing his body over Sophie as glass rained down like lethal confetti.
