Chapter 4 - The Predator’s Parlor

The holding cell in the Montgomery County detention center smelled of industrial disinfectant and stale fear.
Vanessa Kensington paced the small, concrete-block room in her ruined designer dress, her fingernails dug deep into her palms until skin broke. She had expected bail within the hour. She had expected Richard to call senior partners, to hire high-priced criminal defense attorneys, to pull strings the way he always did when things got complicated.
Instead, the guards had brought her here. No phone call. No attorney. Just a locked steel door and a heavy silence.
The heavy latch finally clanked.
The steel door swung open, and Harrison Cole stepped into the cell.
He didn't look angry. He looked immaculate. The blood-stained Brioni suit was gone, replaced by a razor-sharp charcoal three-piece suit, a crisp white shirt, and a silver tie. He stepped inside, closing the door behind him with a slow, deliberate click that echoed like a gunshot.
Vanessa shrank back against the concrete wall, her breath catching in her throat. "You... you aren't allowed in here. Where is my lawyer? I demand to make a phone call!"
Harrison stopped two feet away from her. He placed a single manila folder on the small stainless-steel table bolted to the floor.
"Your lawyer, Ms. Kensington, is currently sitting in a federal holding facility in Philadelphia," Harrison said, his voice smooth, hypnotic, and utterly devoid of warmth. "He was arrested forty-five minutes ago for laundering corporate embezzlement funds through the interior design firm you own. Coincidentally, those funds belong to my sister."
Vanessa’s knees wobbled. She slid down the concrete wall until she hit the cold floor, staring up at him with wide, terrified eyes. "It was an accident," she choked out, tears finally spilling over her cheeks. "I didn't mean to push her that hard. We just... we just wanted her out of the way. Richard said—"
"I know what Richard said," Harrison interrupted quietly. "I have every text message, every offshore wire transfer receipt, and every voice memo of the two of you mocking my sister's miscarriages stored on a secure server that cannot be subpoenaed, deleted, or suppressed."
He leaned down slightly, placing both hands on the edge of the table, bringing his face level with hers.
"Do you know what happens to people who try to destroy my family, Vanessa?"
She couldn't speak. Her vocal cords refused to cooperate.
"They don't just go to prison," Harrison whispered, his eyes locking onto hers with terrifying precision. "They lose their name, their history, their future, and every single person they ever thought loved them. Richard is currently sitting in his empty office, watching his entire life turn to ash. And you? You are going to plead guilty to first-degree aggravated assault resulting in the termination of a pregnancy. You will serve twenty-five years without the possibility of parole in a maximum-security facility three hundred miles from here."
"Please," Vanessa sobbed, reaching out to grab his trouser leg. "Please, Mr. Cole... have mercy."
May you like
Harrison slowly pulled his leg back, standing up straight and adjusting his cuffs.
"Mercy," Harrison said softly, turning toward the door, "is what I give my opponents when I let them keep their clothes. You don't get mercy."
