Chapter 9 - Blueprints for Tomorrow

Spring returned to Philadelphia with an explosion of cherry blossoms along the Schuylkill River.
The construction site at the corner of South Street was a hive of controlled activity. Heavy machinery hummed quietly, workers in yellow hard hats moved with practiced precision, and giant steel beams were lifted into place against the clear blue sky.
Standing on a wooden observation deck overlooking the foundation was Khloe Cole.
She wore a simple beige trench coat, her hair blowing gently in the morning breeze. In her hand, she held a large leather tube containing architectural blueprints—not the complicated, deceptive blueprints of her past life, but clean, open, light-filled designs for a community health and family support center bearing her late daughter’s name: The Elena Foundation.
Footsteps crunched on the gravel behind her.
"You're going to catch a cold standing out here without a scarf," Harrison said, walking up beside her and handing her a paper cup of hot black coffee.
Khloe took the cup, wrapping her hands around the warm cardboard and smiling up at her brother. "I'm fine, Harry. Really. The fresh air feels good."
Harrison looked out over the massive construction site, his expression softening just a fraction. "The foundation board approved the final budget this morning. The pediatric wing will be fully operational by next spring. You're going to help a lot of people, Khloe."
"We are going to help a lot of people," Khloe corrected gently, bumping her shoulder against his arm.
For a long moment, neither of them spoke. They simply watched the steel skeleton of the new building rise against the Philadelphia skyline—a city that had tried to break them, only to find out that some families cannot be dismantled, no matter how hard you push.
"Do you ever think about him?" Khloe asked quietly, her voice barely carrying over the hum of the cranes.
Harrison took a sip of his coffee, his eyes fixed on the horizon where the sun was beginning to break through the clouds.
"About who?" Harrison asked.
May you like
Khloe smiled, a genuine, radiant smile that reached all the way to her eyes.
"Exactly," she said.
