Chapter 1 - THE TAPE THAT shattered EVERYTHING

The crackle of static echoed through my living room before Oscar’s voice came through the speaker. It wasn’t the gentle, soft-spoken voice he used when he called Lucy his "queen." It was cold, sharp, and dripping with malicious confidence.

Background laughter and the clinking of beer bottles drifted through the recording—a sunny backyard barbecue, completely oblivious to the tragedy being plotted.

"She actually signed it?" a male voice asked, likely Julian.

"Of course she did," Oscar chuckled, a sound that sent a jolt of ice straight down my spine. "She was having contractions every four minutes. I told her it was the birth certificate paperwork. She would have signed her own execution if I’d asked her to."

Lucy choked back a sob, her trembling hand clutching her newborn son tighter to her chest. I reached out, resting a steady hand on her shoulder, but my eyes remained glued to the recorder.

"And the apartment?" the voice continued.

"Transferred to Mom’s LLC," Oscar boasted. "By the time Lucy realizes what happened, she’ll be on the street. But that’s just phase one. Once she’s broke and homeless, Mom files for emergency full custody of the baby. We argue postpartum psychosis, emotional instability, no visible means of support. The court hands my son over to us, and Lucy gets zero child support, zero assets, and a permanent mental health record. She won't have a cent to fight us back."

Regina’s shrill laugh cut through the audio. "She’s an orphan, Oscar. Nobody is coming to save her."

The recording stopped.

Silence stretched across the room, heavy and suffocating. Lucy’s eyes were wide, glassy, and completely drained of color. They hadn't just kicked her out into the freezing cold; they had constructed a meticulous, predatory trap designed to strip her of her home, her dignity, and her child.

"They... they're going to take my baby, Uncle Ray," she whispered, her voice fracturing. "They planned this... before he was even born."

"They think you're alone, Lucy," I said, my voice dropping to a harsh, dangerous whisper as I locked eyes with Mr. Medina. "They think because your parents are gone, you have no backer. But they forgot about me."

Mr. Medina snapped his briefcase shut, his expression grim. "This tape is gold, Raymond, but legally, we have a hurdle. Colorado is a one-party consent state, but if the person who recorded this wasn't part of the conversation, it might be inadmissible in court. We need more than an audio clip to pull the rug out from under them. We need to catch them in the act of executing the fraud."

"How?" Lucy asked, tears finally spilling over her eyelashes.

"We play their game," I said, a dark plan taking root in my mind. "Oscar thinks you’re defeated, barefoot, and hopeless. He expects you to come begging. So, you're going to give him exactly what he expects... until we drop the trap door."
