Chapter 6 - INTO THE LION’S DEN

By nightfall, snow was falling heavily over the gleaming skyscrapers of downtown Denver.

The penthouse suite of the Vanguard Tower towered over the city—a fortress of glass, steel, and unpunished crime.

I stood in the lobby, dressed in a sharp black suit, flanked by Mr. Medina and Teresa. I wasn't going to wait for another cryptic text. I wasn't going to let them hunt Lucy from the dark.

"Raymond," Medina warned as we stepped into the private elevator. "Victor Vance is protected by a team of high-priced corporate lawyers. If you lose your temper in there, he will use it to file a federal injunction against you."

"I didn't come here to break his jaw, Medina," I said, my voice eerily calm as the elevator floor numbers rapidly ticked upward. "I came here to destroy his legacy."

The elevator doors slid open directly into a magnificent, dimly lit penthouse office with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the glowing city below.

Sitting behind a massive mahogany desk was a silver-haired man in his late fifties, casually sipping scotch from a crystal glass. Standing beside him was Julian—Oscar’s brother—looking pale, panicked, and sweating through his designer suit.

"Raymond Carter," Victor Vance said, his voice smooth, cultured, and entirely devoid of remorse. "I was wondering how long it would take you to follow the breadcrumbs."

"Where is my sister’s journal, Victor?" I asked, taking two slow steps into the room.

Victor chuckled softly, setting his glass down on the desk. "You mean this dusty old thing?" He held up the velvet box stolen from Lucy’s safe. "It's fascinating, really. Your sister kept meticulous records of her land surveys before her tragic passing. She discovered that the dirt beneath her small farm in Colorado Springs contained one of the largest lithium deposits in the region."

My eyes narrowed. "You killed them for dirt."

"I secured an asset," Victor corrected coldly. "Your sister refused to sell. She wanted to keep the land for little Lucy's future. So, I created an opportunity to acquire it. But then you took the girl in, kept her safe, and I had to wait until she reached adulthood to maneuver my idiot son Oscar into her life to claim the rights through marriage."

Julian shifted uncomfortably. "Dad... the DA has my office surrounded. They know about the forged signatures!"

"Shut up, Julian," Victor snapped without looking at him. He turned back to me, a cruel smile touching his lips. "You see, Raymond, you think you've won because Oscar is in a jail cell. But Oscar was a throwaway piece. A pawn. I hold the land deeds, I hold the medical records, and I own the judges in this district. If you press charges against my family, I will release documents proving that you received a cut of the insurance money fifteen years ago. I will make Lucy believe her beloved Uncle Ray was part of the plot that killed her parents."

He leaned forward, his eyes burning with toxic authority. "Walk away, Raymond. Leave the apartment, abandon the lawsuit, and let my lawyers handle Lucy’s custody agreement. Or I will destroy what little sanity your niece has left."

I stood there, looking at the man who had orchestrated fifteen years of torment for my family.

And then, for the first time all evening, I smiled.
