Chapter 3 - THE GHOST OF THE PASTThe memory slammed into Julian’s mind with the force of a tidal wave.

It was a night he had tried to bury under endless work, cold ambition, and a loveless engagement to Victoria Vance. Three years ago, Westbridge Enterprises had hosted its grandest charity gala. Julian had been heavily drugged—not by an enemy, but by Victoria’s own father, who was desperately trying to force a corporate merger through marriage by compromising the eligible bachelor.

Julian remembered stumbling away from the crowded ballroom, seeking refuge in the quiet, dimly lit private suites upstairs. He remembered the soft, frantic warmth of a woman’s arms, the scent of lavender and rain, and the desperate whispers in the dark.

When he woke up the next morning, the suite was completely empty. The bed was made. The only trace of the woman who had shared his night was a single, damp towel on the bathroom floor.

He had ordered his private security to search for her, but Victoria’s father had intercepted the reports, burying the investigation to ensure Julian remained isolated, controllable, and firmly tethered to the Vance family empire.

And Clara... quiet, unassuming Clara had slipped into the Westbridge household a year later as a low-level maid, hiding in plain sight, terrified of what would happen if the billionaire ever discovered that the silent girl scrubbing his floors was the mother of his secret child.

"I didn't want your money, Mr. Westbridge," Clara whispered, her voice trembling violently as she finally opened her eyes to meet his intense gaze. "I didn't want a scandal. I knew who you were—the untouchable titan, engaged to a woman who would have torn me and my baby to shreds. The morning after... I saw Victoria standing outside the suite door with a security guard, looking for you. I slipped out the service stairs. I realized right then that my world and your world were separated by an ocean of glass."

Julian felt as though the floor had dropped out from beneath him.

"An ocean of glass..." he repeated bitterly. He took a step forward, ignoring Clara's defensive flinch, and gently knelt down until he was eye-level with little Maya.

The three-year-old stopped crying. She tilted her head, staring at the tall, imposing man who had just terrified the scary lady in the fancy dress. With a child's pure, unburdened intuition, Maya didn't see a billionaire or a master; she saw someone who looked remarkably familiar.

Slowly, hesitantly, Maya reached out a tiny, smudge-covered hand and poked Julian right on the tip of his nose.

Julian’s breath hitched. A low, ragged sound escaped his throat—half laugh, half sob. He gently caught her tiny fingers in his large, calloused palm, marveling at how fragile she felt, how completely she held his entire world in the palm of her hand.

"Hi there," Julian whispered, his voice cracking with emotion. "Are you Maya?"

The little girl nodded solemnly. "You have eyes like mine," she piped up, her childish voice clear and piercing in the quiet room. "Mommy says my eyes are special. They look like the stars when the sun goes down."

Julian felt a tear break free from his lashes, cutting a hot path down his cheek. He looked up at Clara, his expression a chaotic storm of fierce protective fury, overwhelming love, and profound guilt.

"You hid my child from me for three years," Julian said, his voice deadly serious, though his thumb gently stroked the back of Maya’s hand. "You let me live in ignorance while you suffered alone in the shadows of my own home."

"What choice did I have?" Clara fired back, a sudden surge of maternal courage overriding her fear. She pulled Maya closer, her eyes flashing with defiance. "Look at your life, Julian! Look at Victoria, look at the vultures on your board of directors, look at the tabloids that stalk your every move! If I had come forward, they would have destroyed us. They would have claimed I was a gold-digger trying to trap a billionaire. They would have taken my baby away from me!"

Julian stood up slowly, towering over them once more. But this time, there was no menace in his posture—only absolute, unyielding resolve.

He reached into his pocket, pulled out his heavy platinum-encrusted corporate phone, and dialed a direct, high-priority extension.

"Security," Julian commanded into the speaker, his voice dropping into its most lethal executive register. "Lock down the entire perimeter of the estate. No one enters, no one leaves. And call Marcus Vance... tell him his daughter is being escorted off my property right now, and if he or his family ever attempt to contact Westbridge Enterprises again, I will personally strip them down to their last penny before breakfast."

He clicked the phone dead and slid it back into his pocket.

He turned his full, undivided attention back to Clara and Maya.

"Pack your things," Julian ordered softly.

Clara froze. "What?"

"You're not leaving the estate, Clara," Julian said, stepping closer and extending a strong, steady hand down toward them. "You're moving into the master suite. And tomorrow morning, the entire world is going to learn the truth about who really owns Westbridge Enterprises—and who my true family is."
