Chapter 5 - MIDNIGHT CONFESSIONSThe hallway of the east wing was deathly quiet.

Julian walked with silent, measured steps, his hand hovering briefly over the brass door handle of the suite. He pushed it open gently, careful not to wake the sleeping child.

The room was bathed in the soft, warm glow of a bedside lamp. Clara was sitting in a plush velvet armchair by the window, staring out at the distant city lights glittering against the dark horizon. She had changed out of her maid's uniform into a simple, oversized cotton sweater and soft trousers that Julian had had rushed up from a private boutique an hour ago.

Hearing the soft click of the door, Clara turned quickly. She stood up, smoothing down her pants nervously.

"Mr. Westbridge... I thought you'd be in your study dealing with the investors," she said softly, her voice laced with exhaustion.

"Julian," he corrected gently, stepping into the room and closing the door behind him. He walked over slowly, stopping a few feet away from her. "Please, Clara. Call me Julian."

Clara looked down at her hands, twisting her fingers together. "It feels... wrong. For four years, I've been invisible to you. Just another set of hands cleaning up after your dinner parties. Now everything is upside down."

"Nothing is upside down, Clara," Julian replied, his voice dropping to a low, tender register that he rarely shared with anyone. "For the first time in three years, everything is finally right side up."

He took another step closer, closing the distance between them. In the soft lamplight, he could see the faint dark circles under Clara’s eyes—the physical toll of sleepless nights, working double shifts to afford formula and rent in a cramped, drafty apartment while keeping her baby hidden from the world.

A wave of suffocating guilt crashed over him.

"You went through hell," Julian whispered, reaching out hesitantly. He gently placed his hand on her shoulder, feeling her flinch slightly before she relaxed into his touch. "You raised my child entirely on your own, hiding in the very house where I sleep, terrified of the monster my life had become."

"I was protecting her," Clara said, a single tear escaping her eye and tracking down her cheek. "You don't know what Victoria and her father are capable of, Julian. When I left that morning three years ago, I heard them in the hallway. Vance told Victoria that any interference in your corporate path would be 'eliminated.' I knew if they found out I was carrying your baby, they wouldn't just fire me. They would have made sure I disappeared completely."

Julian’s hand tightened on her shoulder, his knuckles whitening. The protective fury burning inside him flared hot and bright.

"They won't ever touch you again," Julian vowed, his voice thick with unyielding steel. "Tomorrow morning at the board meeting, I am destroying the Vance family’s grip on this company once and for all. And tomorrow afternoon... the entire world is going to know who Maya Westbridge is."

Clara looked up into his dark, intense eyes, searching for any sign of hesitation, any trace of doubt. Instead, she found an ocean of fierce, protective devotion that took her breath away.

"And what about us?" Clara whispered, the question hanging heavily in the fragrant night air. "What are we to you, Julian? A scandal? A sudden obligation?"

Julian didn't answer with words. Instead, he reached up, gently wiping the tear from her cheek with his thumb, and pulled her softly against his chest. Clara let out a shaky breath, burying her face in the warm wool of his sweater, wrapping her arms around his waist as the years of fear, isolation, and silent heartbreak finally began to melt away.

Little Maya stirred softly from the bed, letting out a cute little sigh in her sleep, completely unaware that the world outside their door was about to explode.
