Chapter 1 - The Mountain Fortress and the Midnight ShadowThe crisp Montana air bit sharply at Clara Winslow’s skin as she stood on her modest apartment balcony, staring out toward the jagged peaks of the Bridger Mountains. Days had passed since Daniel Yellowhawk left Sutton’s Hardware, yet his presence still lingered in her mind like smoke from a dying campfire

Driven by an irresistible pull and a weekend free of shifts, Clara packed a small backpack, laced up her sturdy hiking boots, and set off on the rugged trail leading deep into the high country. Rumor among the townsfolk was that Daniel was building on an old, abandoned homestead tucked away in Shadow Ridge—a steep, heavily forested area most locals avoided due to rough terrain and old legends of reclusive miners.

As she climbed higher, the forest grew dense, the scent of pine and damp earth filling her lungs. Hours passed in a grueling climb that tested every inch of her six-foot-four frame. Just as her muscles began to ache and doubt crept into her mind, a low, guttural growl broke through the rustling of the leaves.

Clara froze.

From the shadowed brush emerged a creature that made her breath hitch. It wasn’t a wolf or a mountain lion, but a massive, scarred Cane Corso mix with obsidian fur, eyes like molten amber, and a collar studded with heavy silver plates. The beast stood nearly as tall as her waist, muscles rippling beneath a sleek coat, radiating pure, untamed power. It barred its teeth, emitting a warning rumble that vibrated through the ground.

"Easy, big guy," Clara whispered, raising her hands slowly, palms open, remembering everything she’d ever read about handling large, protective dogs. She didn't flinch. Instead, she stood her ground, her height working to project calm authority rather than aggression.

The dog tilted its head, sniffing the air. The menacing posture shifted, curiosity momentarily overriding hostility. But before the standoff could resolve, a sharp whistle echoed through the forest canopy.

"Bane. Heel."

Daniel Yellowhawk stepped out from behind a thick stand of cedar, his imposing frame matching the wild landscape. He looked at Clara with absolute astonishment.
