Chapter 2 - The Truth Beneath the TimberDaniel’s dark eyes narrowed slightly as he took in Clara standing breathless, yet defiant, before his massive guard dog. Bane immediately trotted over to his master, sitting obediently at Daniel’s side while keeping a watchful yellow eye on the intruder.

"Clara," Daniel said, his deep voice carrying a tone of genuine disbelief. "What are you doing miles out here on the ridge? This trail isn't meant for casual hikers."

"I needed to see," Clara answered, her voice steady despite her racing heart. She brushed a stray lock of hair from her face, refusing to look away. "You said you were building a house for someone who deserved better. In a town like Ashford Falls, nobody builds anything without everyone else having an opinion. I had to find out for myself what kind of place requires half a town’s lumber supply."

A slow, rare smile broke across Daniel’s weathered face, softening his rugged features. "Come inside," he gestured toward the partially framed log structure hidden in a natural clearing fifty yards away. "You earned a tour just for making it up here without turning back."

As they walked toward the massive timber-frame home, Clara’s jaw dropped. The scale of the construction was staggering—thick cedar beams notched with master craftsmanship, high vaulted ceilings designed to capture the mountain light, and massive stone hearths that spoke of permanence and safety.

"You’re building this entirely by yourself?" Clara asked, running a hand over a smoothly sanded support pillar.

"Mostly," Daniel replied, grabbing two bottles of cold water from a cooler and handing one to her. "My hands do the heavy lifting, but the vision belongs to someone who had to leave everything behind to survive."

Before Clara could press for details about this mysterious person, a sudden, sharp crack echoed from the lower ridge—the unmistakable snap of a dry branch under a heavy boot.

Bane instantly sprang into a defensive crouch, his low growl turning into a vicious snarl. Daniel’s relaxed demeanor vanished in a fraction of a second, his body tensing like a coiled spring.

"Stay here," Daniel ordered in a lethal whisper, his hand sliding beneath his flannel shirt to grip the heavy handle of a hunting knife tucked into his belt. "Do not move."
