Chapter 3 - The Fake Funeral and the Real Monster"Marcus..." Eleanor’s voice was raspy, the sedative gas already clawing at her consciousness, making her limbs feel like lead. She leaned heavily against the mahogany desk, fighting the darkness with every ounce of her formidable willpower. "You... you ungrateful serpent. I raised you like a son after your father died."

Marcus chuckled, a low, cruel sound that bounced off the silent walls of the penthouse. He walked slowly toward them, the expensive Italian leather of his shoes clicking rhythmically against the floor. He raised the silenced pistol, the black metal gleaming under the faint emergency lights.

"That’s your biggest flaw, Eleanor," Marcus said, his tone dripping with patronizing condescension. "You always thought charity and blood were enough to buy loyalty. You gave Claire everything—the empire, the board votes, the adoration. And what did I get? A corner office with a nice view while I did all the real work keeping Vance Global afloat through the 2008 crash."

Maya, coughing violently and clutching her stomach as the gas took hold of her lungs, glared up at him through tear-filled eyes. "You... you stole my life. You took me away from my mother."

Marcus stopped. He looked down at the twenty-two-year-old waitress, his eyes narrowing with genuine amusement.

"Oh, sweet little Lily," Marcus mocked, crouching down slightly to meet her gaze. "I didn't just take you away; I gave you a second chance at life. Do you know what would have happened if I let you and your mother live? Claire was planning to renounce her inheritance, marry some penniless artist, and give every single penny of the Vance trust to a foundation. She was going to ruin us all."

Eleanor’s eyes widened in horror. "She... she told you that?"

"She whispered it to me the night before the fire," Marcus smiled darkly, standing back up and pointing the barrel of the gun straight at Maya’s forehead. "So, I improvised. I hired Martha to snatch the baby from the crib while I rigged the gas lines in the west wing. A little spark, a roaring fire, and poof—the tragic end of the direct bloodline. Martha took the brat and went into hiding, paid off with enough dirty cash to keep her mouth shut for a decade. But stupid Martha let you keep that stupid necklace."

Marcus shook his head in mock disappointment. "Sentimentality is a fatal flaw, Lily. And tonight, history is going to repeat itself. A tragic gas leak in a luxury hotel penthouse. How poetic. Three generations of the Vance family wiped out in one tragic accident."

He cocked the gun. The metallic click echoed like thunder in the sealed room.

Maya closed her eyes, tears streaming down her face as she whispered a silent prayer. I’m sorry, Mom. I found my grandmother, but I couldn't save her.

BANG!

The sharp, deafening crack of a gunshot ripped through the penthouse.

Maya flinched, bracing herself for the burning agony of a bullet tearing through her flesh. But the pain didn't come. Instead, a heavy, lifeless weight slumped forward, collapsing directly across her lap.

Maya opened her eyes.

Marcus wasn't standing anymore. He was on his knees, his eyes wide with absolute shock, staring down at his own chest where a dark, spreading stain of crimson was rapidly soaking through his expensive white dress shirt. Behind him, the reinforced steel balcony door—which had been locked tight—was shattered inward in a shower of glass and splintered wood.

Through the smoke and drifting white curtains of the balcony stepped a figure in tactical gear, holding a smoking assault rifle with a high-end suppressor.

"Clear!" shouted a deep, authoritative voice into a comms headset.

Two more tactical operatives swarmed into the room, neutralizing the remaining security cameras with small EMP devices that instantly restored the lights and popped the smart-locks open.

Eleanor, gasping for fresh air as the ventilation system reversed and sucked out the toxic gas, fell to her knees beside Marcus. She looked up past the armed operatives to see a tall, imposing man in a charcoal-grey tailored overcoat stepping through the shattered glass.

It was Julian Sterling—Victor’s estranged son and the head of the country’s most elite private intelligence and cybersecurity firm, Sterling Black Ops.

Julian walked calmly over to the groaning Marcus, kicked the dropped pistol away with his shoe, and looked down at Eleanor with a calm, reassuring nod.

"Sorry we're late, Mrs. Vance," Julian said smoothly, checking his Rolex. "Traffic on the highway was murder."
