Chapter 4 - Shadows in the Corporate PenthouseThe morning sun broke over the city, casting golden rays across the polished marble floors of the Vance Global corporate headquarters on the fifty-fifth floor. But inside the executive boardroom, the atmosphere was as cold as a Siberian winter.

Seated at the head of the massive mahogany table was Eleanor Vance. Gone was the grieving, trembling grandmother from the hotel suite; in her place sat the undisputed empress of global finance. Her posture was iron-straight, her gaze piercing every single executive, board member, and legal advisor sitting around the table.

To her right sat Maya. Dressed in a bespoke, ivory-white Chanel pantsuit that Eleanor had personally had rushed to the estate at dawn, Maya looked like a completely different person. The weary, terrified waitress was gone, replaced by a striking young woman whose hazel eyes carried a quiet, unbreakable resilience. Though she still wore the diamond necklace—now safely tucked against her collar—her hands were steady as she reviewed the financial portfolios laid out before her.

Standing near the floor-to-ceiling windows was Julian Sterling, arms crossed over his chest, keeping a watchful eye on the doors.

"I called this emergency board meeting," Eleanor’s voice rang out, cold and razor-sharp, cutting through the nervous whispering of the executives, "to address a matter of the utmost urgency regarding the future of Vance Global."

A middle-aged board member named Robert Sterling—no relation to Julian—cleared his throat nervously. "Madam Chair, with all due respect, where is Marcus? He hasn't answered his phone all morning, and the stock market opens in twenty minutes. Without his signature, the European merger cannot—"

"Marcus will not be signing anything ever again," Eleanor interrupted flatly.

A murmur rippled through the room. Robert frowned. "What do you mean? Is he sick?"

"Marcus is currently residing in a maximum-security medical prison wing," Eleanor said, her eyes narrowing as she locked onto Robert’s shifting gaze. "Under charges of attempted murder, corporate fraud, kidnapping, and the twenty-year-old arson-homicide of my daughter, Claire."

The room exploded into chaos. Shouts of disbelief, gasps, and panicked questions echoed off the glass walls.

"Order!" Eleanor slammed her palm against the table, the sharp crack silencing the room instantly. "The police have recovered Marcus’s confession, recorded by my security detail last night. They also recovered the original financial ledgers from twenty years ago, proving that Marcus systematically embezzled funds and fabricated death certificates to seize control of this company."

She paused, letting the heavy weight of her words sink into every corrupt soul in the room. Then, she turned her head and gestured gracefully toward Maya.

"Allow me to introduce you all to the rightful heir to the Vance Empire, and my legally recognized granddaughter: Lily Vance."

All heads snapped toward Maya. Some executives looked terrified; others looked calculating. Robert Sterling’s face turned an ugly shade of pale green. He recognized that face immediately—the exact replica of Claire Vance from twenty years ago.

Maya stood up slowly, her presence commanding the room without her even having to raise her voice. She walked to the center of the room, resting her hands on the edge of the mahogany table.

"I know most of you in this room built your careers under Marcus’s corrupt regime," Maya said, her voice clear, calm, and carrying an unmistakable authority that shocked even Eleanor. "Starting today, the old rules are dead. Every department, every subsidiary, and every overseas account will be audited by Sterling Intelligence starting in the next sixty seconds. If you are clean, you have nothing to fear. If you were involved in Marcus’s little games..."

Maya smiled faintly, a chilling echo of Eleanor’s legendary ruthlessness. "...pack your desks now."

Robert Sterling’s hands trembled as he slowly stood up, pushing his chair back. "This is insane! You can't just—security! Someone—"

May you like

"Security is outside, Robert," Julian Sterling spoke up from the window, his voice smooth and deadly calm as he pulled out his tablet. "And by the way, my team just decrypted Marcus’s personal laptop. Do you want me to read aloud the email chain between him, you, and the offshore shell company in the Cayman Islands regarding the 'elimination of the heir'?"

Robert froze. The color drained entirely from his face, and he slowly sank back down into his chair, defeated.
