Chapter 6 - A Trap Set in Plain SightBack at the Vance Global headquarters, the executive boardroom was eerily quiet. The rest of the board members had been escorted out by security for questioning, leaving only Robert Sterling sitting alone at the far end of the massive mahogany table.

The heavy oak doors swung open. Maya walked in first, looking confident and poised, followed closely by two security guards. Eleanor walked in right behind her, leaning slightly on her polished ebony cane.
"Robert," Eleanor said coldly, stopping halfway across the room. "I expected you to have cleared your desk by now. Are you waiting for the authorities to personally escort you out in handcuffs?"
Robert didn't look up immediately. He slowly swiveled his executive chair around, facing them with a calm, unnerving smile. The nervous sweating from earlier was completely gone. In its place was a cold, calculating confidence that made the hair on the back of Maya’s arms stand up.
"Handcuffs, Eleanor? Really?" Robert chuckled softly, standing up and buttoning his suit jacket. "You always were too dramatic. You think because Marcus was stupid enough to get caught, you’ve won the whole game?"
Eleanor’s eyes narrowed. "What are you talking about?"
"I’m talking about the fact that Vance Global was never just Marcus’s project," Robert said smoothly, walking slowly toward the sleek glass wall overlooking the city. "Marcus was a loud-mouthed pawn. I’m the one who engineered the merger with the overseas syndicate twenty years ago. I’m the one who helped him orchestrate the fire. And honestly, I have to hand it to you—bringing this little waitress back from the dead was a brilliant theatrical touch. Too bad her story is about to end on the cutting room floor."
Maya took a sharp step forward, her voice trembling with rising fury. "You monsters killed my mother! You destroyed my entire life!"
"Oh, sweetie, don't take it personally," Robert smiled patronizingly, pulling a small silver remote control out of his pocket. "It’s just business. And unfortunately for you two, business requires a clean slate."
Robert pressed a large red button on the remote.
BEEP.
Instantly, the heavy oak doors slammed shut with a thunderous crash. A series of thick, fireproof steel shutters dropped over the windows and exits, sealing the boardroom completely from the outside world.
From the centralized air-conditioning vents above, a heavy, dark-grey smoke began to hiss violently.
"A cyanide-based neurotoxin," Robert sneered, backing away toward a hidden panic-exit door behind the mahogany shelving. "It kills within sixty seconds. By the time Julian Sterling and his little tactical squad figure out how to blast through the reinforced titanium doors, you’ll both be nothing more than cold statistics."
Eleanor didn't panic. Despite her age, she stood tall, her eyes locked on Robert with a look of pure, unadulterated contempt. "You think you can escape, Robert? My security team is already on their way up."
"Let them come!" Robert laughed maniacally, stepping backward through the secret panel. "By the time they get here, I’ll be on a private jet soaring over the Atlantic, inheriting the entire Vance-Sterling empire!"
The secret door slammed shut with a heavy metallic click, locking automatically from the outside.
The grey smoke hissed louder, filling the room with a choking, chemical fog. Maya coughed violently, her knees buckling as dizziness overtook her.
"Grandma..." Maya gasped, grabbing Eleanor’s arm. "We... we have to get out of here..."
Eleanor pulled a small, heavy gold signet ring off her thumb—the master override key for the entire Vance Global building architecture—and pressed it firmly into Maya’s palm.
"Listen to me, Lily," Eleanor whispered, her voice surprisingly strong despite the encroaching poison. "The emergency floor vent under the executive podium... it connects directly to the fresh-air intake shaft. Go! Now!"
May you like
"No! I'm not leaving you!" Maya cried, tears streaming down her face as she coughed.
Before Eleanor could push her away, the reinforced ceiling directly above them suddenly shuddered violently. A deafening roar echoed through the room as heavy explosives detonated overhead, blowing a massive hole right through the center of the ceiling in a shower of sparks and falling concrete.
