Chapter 1 - THE LIE THAT COST SEVEN YEARS OF TORMENT!

The damp, rotting air of the basement seemed to freeze solid. Dante Russo stood motionless, his towering frame casting a shadow over the crumbling mattress where Elena lay. The words hung in the air like a lethal toxin, choking the breath right out of him.

“Dante… they told me you ordered the fire.”

Nico, standing by the cracked doorway, drew his weapon in a reflex born of pure survival instinct, his eyes scanning the shadows of the basement. "Boss," he hissed, his voice taut as a piano wire. "This is a setup. It has to be."

But Dante didn’t hear him. The undisputed king of the Boston underworld felt his knees grow weak for the first time in his thirty-four years of life. He dropped to his knees beside the mattress, ignoring the filth, ignoring the freezing concrete. His large, scarred hand hovered over Elena’s pale, sweat-slicked cheek, trembling violently. He wanted to touch her, to prove she wasn’t a hallucination born of a broken heart, but the sheer terror in her green eyes stopped him dead.

"Elena," Dante choked out, his voice a raw, agonizing whisper. "Look at me. Look into my eyes and tell me if you truly believe I could ever hurt you. I died the day that car went up in flames. I buried my own soul in that cemetery."

The three little girls huddled around their mother like a shield of auburn hair and fierce, protective glares. The boldest one—the one who had sold him the painting—stepped between Dante and the bed, her small hands balled into fists. "Don't touch our mommy! The bad men said you would come with a smile before you finished the job!"

Elena coughed violently, a dark speck of blood staining her lips. The sound tore through Dante’s chest like a hollow-point bullet.

"Dante..." she gasped, her vision blurring as she looked at his face, searching the harsh lines of his jaw, the genuine agony swirling in his dark eyes. Seven years of hiding, seven years of eating scraps, seven years of telling her daughters that their father was a monster—all of it began to crack under the weight of his raw grief. "The cassette tape... they sent it to my motel room the night of the crash. It was your voice, Dante. You were talking to your consigliere, Silas. You said... you said I was a liability. You said to make it look like an accident."

Dante’s blood turned to pure, boiling liquid fire. Silas.

Silas was the man who had raised him after his father was assassinated. Silas was the one who had handled the cleanup of the crash. Silas was the one who had handed Dante the charred remains of Elena's silver ring.

"Silas," Dante whispered, a terrifyingly calm expression settling over his face—the look he wore right before he erased a bloodline.

Suddenly, a heavy thud echoed from the stairs outside. Nico whirled around, his silenced pistol raised. The sound of rapid footsteps approached.

"Boss! We’ve been tracked!" Nico shouted. "We need to move now!"

Dante didn’t hesitate. He scooped Elena’s frail, lightweight body into his arms, wrapping her tightly in his wool coat. "Nico, grab the girls. If a single hair on their heads is harmed, Boston will burn by midnight."

As they rushed up the dark stairs, the bold triplet clutched the coffee can of coins to her chest, while her sisters clung to Nico’s tailored suit. But as they broke out into the freezing October alley, the blinding headlights of three black SUVs illuminated the darkness, trapping them.

The doors flew open, and men armed with automatic rifles stepped out. From the middle vehicle, a familiar, elderly man stepped into the light, leaning heavily on a silver-topped cane.

It was Silas. And he was smiling.

CHAPTER 1 HOOK: Silas looked at the triplets, then at Elena, and sighed with mock disappointment. "Seven years of hiding, Elena, and you ruin it all for a few coins. Dante, my boy... you were never supposed to find out that your daughters were the keys to the entire Russo family fortune."
