Chapter 2 - The Fall of the House of TimberThe sun had not yet burned the morning mist off the canopy of the Pisgah National Forest when the first convoy of unmarked, matte-black heavy-duty utility trucks rolled past the rusting iron gates of the Sterling Timber Mill.

For three generations, the mill had been the beating heart of the local economy and the financial fortress of the Sterling dynasty. Charles Sterling sat behind his massive mahogany desk in the executive suite, swirling a glass of bourbon while glaring at a stack of overdue foreclosure notices he planned to slap on half the township by noon. He took a sip, chuckling to himself as he thought of his grandson Rowan and the little brat in the hospital. Everything is under control, he thought. The world bends to the Sterling name.

The heavy oak doors of his office did not knock; they exploded inward with a deafening crash that splintered the deadbolts.

Charles surged to his feet, his face flushing a furious crimson. "What the hell is the meaning of this? Do you know who I am? I'll have your badges—"

He stopped dead. The men entering his office wore no police patches, no local sheriff stars. They wore utilitarian black tactical gear, their faces hidden behind reinforced composite helmets, carrying specialized digital auditing rigs and federal seizure warrants signed directly by a United States District Judge three states away.

Stepping past them was Marcus Vance, his stride unhurried, his expression like granite. In his hand, he held a sleek aluminum briefcase.

"You..." Charles stammered, color draining entirely from his jaundiced face. "You're just a washed-up grunt. My son-in-law, my family... Sheriff Landry will have you thrown in a hole so deep—"

"Sheriff Landry is currently sitting in a holding cell twelve miles south, watching his pension get liquidated by federal marshals," Marcus interrupted, his voice cutting through the office like a butcher's knife. He dropped the aluminum briefcase onto the mahogany desk with a heavy thud and popped the latches.

Inside lay thick stacks of forensic accounting ledgers, digital drives containing intercepted wiretaps of bribes paid to state legislators, and certified copies of property deeds tied up in predatory lending scams orchestrated by Sterling Valley Finance.

"You didn't just break a little girl's bones, Charles," Marcus said, leaning across the desk until their eyes locked. "You built a kingdom on quicksand, and the tide has come in."

Before Charles could reach for the panic button wired to his desk drawer, two federal agents stepped forward, snapping heavy steel zip-ties around his arthritic wrists. As they dragged the patriarch of Sterling Falls past the floor-to-ceiling windows, Charles looked down into the courtyard.

Every single log truck, every piece of heavy industrial machinery, and every computer server in the building was being tagged with federal seizure seals. The empire was bleeding out in real time.
