Chapter 4 - The Unraveling of the QueenIn the master suite of the Sterling manor, Evelyn Sterling stood before her gilded vanity mirror, her hands trembling as she tried to fasten a diamond earring. The house was dead silent. The staff had vanished hours ago, fleeing the property like rats abandoning a sinking ship when the federal black-and-whites swarmed the perimeter.

The heavy oak front door of the mansion swung open with a slow, ominous creak. Heavy footsteps began to mount the grand staircase.
Evelyn spun around, grabbing a heavy silver candlestick from the tabletop. "Who is there?! If you take one more step, I'll have the sheriff—"
"Sheriff Landry isn't coming, Evelyn."
Miranda stepped out from the shadows of the hallway landing, her face pale, her hair disheveled, looking like a ghost of her former self. Behind her stood two federal marshals, their service weapons holstered, their expressions carved from stone.
Evelyn lowered the candlestick, her eyes narrowing with aristocratic fury. "Miranda? What is the meaning of this? Why aren't you calling our lawyers? Why are these federal thugs standing in my hallway?"
"Because your lawyers were arrested forty minutes ago for wire fraud and witness tampering," Miranda whispered, her voice cracking under the strain of total psychological collapse. She looked at her mother not with filial respect, but with a sudden, venomous realization. "You told me we were invincible, Mother. You raised us to believe that everyone else was beneath our boots. Look at where it got us."
"Silence!" Evelyn hissed, stepping forward to strike her daughter across the face.
The female federal marshal moved with lightning speed, intercepting Evelyn’s wrist in a iron grip and forcing her arm down behind her back with a sharp click of handcuffs.
"Unhand me, you insolent bitch!" Evelyn shrieked, thrashing against the restraint. "Do you know who my family is?! We built this town!"
"No, Evelyn," a deep, calm voice echoed from the top of the stairs.
Marcus Vance stepped into the amber light of the chandelier. He was holding the encrypted video file on a secure terminal, pausing it on the exact frame where Miranda pulled the curtains shut while her daughter was being mutilated on the gravel below.

"You didn't build this town," Marcus said, staring down at the matriarch with piercing intensity. "You infested it. And today, the fumigation is complete."
As Evelyn was hauled down the grand staircase, kicking and screaming obscenities into the empty halls, Miranda sank slowly to her knees on the Persian rug, burying her face in her hands as the final pillars of her family's wicked empire came crashing down around her.
