Chapter 6 - The Final Audit of Sterling FallsThree weeks after the raid, the mountain town of Sterling Falls looked entirely different under the bright morning sun. The rusty iron gates of the Sterling Timber Mill were wide open, bearing a massive federal sign: SEIZED BY ORDER OF THE UNITED STATES DISTRICT COURT.

Charles, Evelyn, Rowan, and Jaxson Sterling were currently being held in a federal maximum-security transit facility two hundred miles away, awaiting a joint trial that legal experts predicted would result in multi-century prison sentences without the possibility of parole. Their assets had been entirely frozen, their properties seized, and their political cronies rounded up in a sweeping statewide anti-corruption purge led by Colonel Mitchell's task force.
In the pediatric recovery ward of the Asheville hospital, the atmosphere was quiet and peaceful.
Sunlight poured through the clean windows, casting warm golden patterns across Lily’s bed. The heavy plaster casts on her arms were gone, replaced by lightweight fiberglass splints that allowed her fingers a little more freedom. Her ribs were healing, and color had finally returned to her cheeks.
Marcus sat in the chair beside her bed, carefully peeling an orange for her.
"Dad?" Lily asked softly, her voice steady and clear for the first time in weeks.
"Yeah, sweet girl?" Marcus looked up, a warm, protective smile breaking across his stern face.
"Do we ever have to go back to Sterling Falls?"
May you like
Marcus reached out, gently taking her small hand—avoiding the healing fingers—and kissed her knuckles. "Never again, Lily. Sterling Falls belongs in the past. We're going home. Real home. Just you and me."
A small, genuine smile touched the corners of Lily’s lips. She leaned back against her pillows, closing her eyes without a trace of hesitation or fear. For the first time in a month, she didn't wake up screaming. She simply drifted off into a deep, untroubled sleep, wrapped safely in her father's unbreakable protection.
