Chapter 10 - The Unbroken ShieldSix months after the federal raid, the federal trial of Brooke West concluded in the U.S. District Court.

The jury deliberated for less than three hours before returning a unanimous guilty verdict on all counts: conspiracy to commit extortion, wire fraud, obstruction of justice, and aggravated assault under color of municipal protection.
Sitting in the gallery, I watched as the judge banged his gavel, handing down a strict fifteen-year federal prison sentence without the possibility of parole for the first ten years. Brooke didn't cry this time. As the marshals placed the cuffs back on her wrists and led her away, she turned her head and met my eyes for one final, bitter second.
I didn't blink. I didn't gloat. I simply looked at her with the cold, unwavering gaze of a federal investigator who knew that justice, though sometimes delayed, was absolute.
After the courtroom cleared, I walked outside into the bright afternoon sunlight. My phone buzzed in my pocket.
It was a text message from Mom: Dinner is on the stove at six. Don't be late.

I smiled, unlocked my car, and tossed my federal ID onto the passenger seat. The badge caught the sunlight, gleaming brightly against the leather console.
The shield was unbroken. The truth was preserved. And for the first time in a very long time, everything was exactly where it belonged.
