Chapter 6 - Brooke’s Last StandBack in the main booking area, Brooke West realized her allies were evaporating. When she saw Captain Landry led out of interrogation in federal zip-ties, flanked by armed marshals, her composure completely shattered.

"You can't do this!" she shrieked, lunging toward the glass partition before a marshal gently but firmly pinned her arms behind her back. "You have no right! This is a local matter! Arthur! Tell them to let me go! Arthur, you coward, say something!"

Arthur walked out of Interrogation Room A holding his signed confession statement. He didn't look at Brooke. He walked straight past her, his eyes fixed on the floor, carrying the heavy weight of a man who had finally woken up from a nightmare too late.

"Arthur!" Brooke screamed, her voice echoing off the concrete walls. "I'm your wife! We have a family!"

"You don't have anything anymore, Brooke," I said, stepping into her line of sight. I pulled out my phone, unlocked it, and held up the screen showing the bank records and the wire transfer from the real estate LLC. "Except maybe a very long federal trial for conspiracy, wire fraud, extortion, and attempted murder."

Brooke went completely white. The manic anger drained out of her in an instant, replaced by a cold, trembling terror. She opened her mouth to speak, but no words came out.

"Take her into custody," I ordered the marshals.

As they slapped steel cuffs onto her wrists—the real, heavy kind, not the ones used to frame my mother—she was dragged away, cursing and screaming down the sterile hallway until the heavy steel doors slammed shut behind her.
