Chapter 8 - The Aftermath at Westbridge PDThe transformation of Westbridge was swift and absolute.

By the end of the week, a temporary transition team appointed by the federal Department of Justice took over command of the precinct. Officers who had participated in the cover-up were suspended pending immediate internal investigation, and several patrolmen implicated in the municipal property seizure ring were stripped of their badges and arrested.

I stood on the front steps of the Westbridge Police Department, watching federal agents load boxes of evidence files and hard drives into the back of a secure transport van.

Stephen Vance walked up beside me, handing me a steaming cup of black coffee from a nearby cart.

"Well, Agent Vance," Stephen said, looking out over the quiet street. "Looks like your homecoming tour turned out to be a bit more eventful than expected."

"You could say that," I replied, taking a sip of the bitter coffee. "Sometimes corruption hides in plain sight until someone finally has the courage to open the door."

"The U.S. Attorney is preparing the final indictments," Stephen continued. "Landry is facing twenty-five years without parole. Brooke’s trial will start next month, and given the financial trail we found, she’s looking at a minimum of fifteen years for extortion and attempted asset seizure. As for your brother... probation and mandatory community service, provided he testifies fully against the mayor's real estate syndicate."

I nodded slowly. It wasn't a fairy tale ending—too much damage had been done, too much trust had been permanently broken. But truth had replaced the lies, and justice had finally pierced the dark, rotten core of a corrupt town.
