Chapter 4 - The Confession of a CowardDown the hall in Interrogation Room A, Arthur sat hunched over, his hands trembling as he stared at the floor. He hadn't spoken a single word since the U.S. Marshals brought him in from the lobby.

I pushed the door open and slid into the chair opposite him.

"Look at me, Arthur," I commanded softly.

He slowly raised his head. He looked broken—not from federal pressure, but from the crushing realization of what his life had become.

"She threatened me, Clara," Arthur whispered, his voice cracking. "Brooke... she said if I didn't back her story, she would take the kids and tell everyone I was the one who hit Mom. She said I had too much to lose. She had everything documented, fake texts, everything..."

"And you let her do it?" I asked, my voice devoid of anger, filled only with a cold, heavy disappointment. "You let her frame our mother—the woman who worked three jobs after Dad died just so we could both go to college? You stood there while she swung a baseball bat at an old woman, and then you lied to the police to save your own skin?"

"I was scared!" Arthur sobbed, burying his face in his hands, his shoulders shaking with genuine grief and terror. "I didn't think it would go this far! Brooke... she isn't right in the head, Clara. She’s been doing things, hiding money, threatening neighbors... I was trapped."

"You weren't trapped, Arthur. You were complicit," I said, sliding a blank confession form across the table and a pen right beside his hands. "You have one chance to salvage whatever shred of dignity you have left. Write down exactly what happened tonight. Every word. Every lie Landry told you to repeat. Sign your name at the bottom."

Arthur looked at the pen, then at me. For a long moment, the room was dead silent save for the hum of the ventilation system.

Slowly, with shaking fingers, he picked up the pen.
