Chapter 7 - THE SACRIFICEA bullet whined past my ear, splintering the wooden frame of the bookshelf inches from my head. Another impact hit Dominic’s shoulder, tearing through his dark suit and blooming a dark, ominous stain across his white shirt.

He didn't even flinch. Adrenaline and sheer, primal protective instinct fueled him. He vaulted over the edge of the desk, closing the distance to the second gunman in a fraction of a second, disarming him with a brutal, efficient sweep of his leg. The third man tried to flank me, lunging toward the console with a heavy combat knife.

I grabbed a heavy crystal paperweight from the desk and swung it with every ounce of strength I possessed, catching him squarely across the temple. He crumpled to the floor, unconscious.

Silence fell over the room, save for the crackling of damaged electronics and the sound of our ragged breathing.

Dominic stumbled backward, leaning heavily against the console. Blood was soaking through his shirt, dripping onto the pristine marble floor.
