CHAPTER 1 — The Birthday Gift That Stopped a Heart

Emily Harper never imagined a tiny plastic tube could destroy an entire lifetime.

It was supposed to be fun.

A family joke.

Her husband, Michael, had bought everyone one of those popular DNA ancestry kits for her fifty-fifth birthday.

"Our family tree might have kings," he laughed.

"Or pirates."

Their daughter Lily rolled her eyes.

"The only thing we're going to discover is Dad is eighty percent coffee."

Everyone laughed.

Wine glasses clinked.

Music played softly across the backyard.

Children chased balloons beneath old maple trees.

It looked like the perfect American family gathering.

Twenty-eight years of marriage.

One daughter.

One son.

One peaceful life.

Emily looked around the garden and smiled.

She had everything she'd ever wanted.

Or so she believed.

Three weeks later...

The email arrived.

Your DNA Results Are Ready.

Emily clicked it without thinking.

A colorful ancestry map appeared.

Mostly English.

Some Irish.

Nothing unusual.

Then...

A notification flashed across the screen.

"Immediate Family Match Found."

She smiled.

Probably Lily.

Or Ben.

Instead...

A stranger's name appeared.

Sophia Bennett.

Probability:

99.9998% Parent-Child Relationship.

Emily frowned.

Who was Sophia Bennett?

She opened the profile.

Twenty-eight years old.

Born...

The exact same day.

The exact same hospital.

The exact same city...

As Lily.

Her heartbeat slowed.

That couldn't be right.

She refreshed the page.

Same result.

She refreshed again.

Nothing changed.

A message notification suddenly appeared.

Hello...

I don't know if this website made a mistake.

But according to the results...

You might be my mother.

Emily couldn't breathe.

Her coffee slipped from her trembling hands.

The mug shattered across the kitchen floor.

Michael rushed in.

"Emily?"

She simply turned the laptop toward him.

His face drained of all color.

"No..."

He whispered.

"No... that's impossible."

Neither of them noticed Lily standing quietly in the hallway.

Reading every single word.

That night...

No one slept.

Michael insisted it had to be a laboratory error.

Emily wanted to believe him.

But something deep inside her refused.

The dates matched.

The hospital matched.

Even the delivery room number listed in Sophia's birth certificate...

Matched Lily's.

At two o'clock in the morning...

Emily opened an old storage box she hadn't touched in decades.

Inside were faded baby bracelets.

Hospital paperwork.

Tiny footprints pressed in blue ink.

Then...

Something caught her eye.

One document looked different.

A nurse's handwriting had been crossed out.

One newborn identification number had been scratched away...

And replaced.

Not neatly.

Hurriedly.

Almost desperately.

Emily stared at it for several seconds.

Her fingers began shaking.

Someone...

Had changed something.

Twenty-eight years ago.

The next morning...

Her phone rang.

Unknown number.

She hesitated.

Then answered.

A young woman spoke softly.

"I think..."

"I think we need to meet."

Emily whispered only one word.

"Sophia?"

Silence.

Then...

"I've spent my whole life wondering why I never looked like anyone in my family."

Emily closed her eyes.

Somewhere...

Another mother was probably asking herself exactly the same question.

May you like

And neither of them yet knew...

Someone had been hiding the truth for almost three decades.
