CHAPTER 5 — The Fire in the Records Room
That night, someone broke into the old hospital archive.
By morning...
The entire records room was ashes.
Birth logs.
Nurse schedules.
Security tapes.
All gone.
The news called it an electrical fire.
Ava knew better.
Victor was cleaning the crime scene.
Again.
But he made one mistake.
He forgot about Nurse Evelyn's second letter.
The one hidden inside the funeral Bible.
Emily found it tucked behind a cracked photograph.
It was addressed to:
The Child Who Was Declared Dead.
Ava opened it with shaking fingers.
Inside was one final confession.
Evelyn had not only witnessed the switch.
She had saved proof.
A blood-stained bracelet.
A newborn photo.
And a cassette tape of Victor giving the order.
But the evidence was not in the hospital.
It was hidden somewhere Victor would never look.
Inside the house of the woman he had ruined first.
Emily.
Emily's face went pale.
"My house?"
Michael suddenly remembered something.
"Your mother left you that old cedar chest."
Emily froze.
The chest had sat unopened in their basement for years.
They drove home in silence.
Ava broke the lock.
Inside were old blankets.
Baby clothes.
A yellowed Bible.
And beneath everything...
A sealed metal box.
Ava opened it.
Inside was the tiny hospital bracelet.
The cassette tape.
And one photograph.
