CHAPTER 9 — The Prison Confession Nobody Expected
Victor Langston requested one visitor.
Only one.
Detective Ava Monroe.
She entered the prison interview room alone.
Victor looked twenty years older.
His expensive suits were gone.
His hands shook.
"You've won," he whispered.
Ava remained standing.
"What do you want?"
Victor slid a sealed envelope across the table.
"I didn't kidnap Caroline."
Ava frowned.
"You expect me to believe you?"
Victor nodded slowly.
"I stole children."
"I bribed doctors."
"I destroyed families."
"But I never killed anyone."
Ava stared silently.
Victor continued.
"The person you're looking for..."
"...was never in the hospital."
He pointed toward the envelope.
Inside was an old photograph.
A young doctor stood beside Nurse Evelyn.
Ava turned the photo over.
Written on the back were four words.
Find Dr. Daniel Reeves.
Victor leaned closer.
"He planned everything."
"He convinced me the baby was dying."
"He forged the medical reports."
"He switched the bracelets."
"And after I paid him..."
"He disappeared with Caroline."
Ava's heartbeat quickened.
"Where is he now?"
Victor smiled sadly.
"If I knew..."
"I wouldn't be sitting here alone."
As Ava stood to leave...
Victor said one final sentence.
"The biggest lie wasn't the baby switch."
"It was why it happened."
Ava stopped walking.
Victor looked directly into her eyes.
"Daniel Reeves wasn't trying to save a child..."
"He was building a new identity."
Outside the prison...
Ava immediately called Emily.
"We're reopening the investigation."
Emily whispered,
"I thought it was finally over."
Ava looked down at the photograph.
"No."
"I think we've only uncovered half the story."
And in a quiet coastal town nearly two thousand miles away...
An elderly doctor watched the evening news.
When he saw Victor Langston being interviewed in handcuffs...
The coffee cup slipped from his hands.
He stared at the television for several long seconds.
Then he walked to the fireplace...
Removed an old passport under the name Daniel Reeves...
And quietly threw it into the flames.
He had been hiding for twenty-eight years.
