CHAPTER 1 – The Bark No One Wanted to Hear

Every morning, people chased the dirty golden shepherd away from Maple Street.
"Get out of here!"
Someone threw rocks.
Others sprayed him with water.
Nobody knew where he came from.
Nobody even knew his name.
The children called him Shadow because he always appeared without making a sound.
Yet every single afternoon...
He quietly sat outside the white house at the end of the street.
Inside that house lived six-month-old baby Noah with his exhausted young mother, Emily.
Emily had recently lost her husband in a construction accident.
She worked two jobs from home while struggling to care for Noah alone.
Neighbors pitied her...
But no one ever offered real help.
Only Shadow came every day.
He never barked.
Never begged for food.
He simply watched the house.
People laughed.
"That stupid dog thinks he owns the place."
One rainy afternoon, Emily finally walked outside carrying a bowl of leftovers.
"You've been sitting here all week..."
Shadow cautiously approached.
Instead of eating...
He gently licked Noah's tiny hand.
The baby burst into laughter.
For the first time in months...
Emily smiled.
From that day forward, Shadow became part of their daily routine.
Every afternoon he waited.
Every evening he escorted Emily when she pushed Noah's stroller through town.
People still mocked the dirty stray.
But Emily didn't care.
Then...
One stormy night...
Everything changed.
The power suddenly went out.
Rain slammed against the windows.
Lightning lit the sky.
Emily finally rocked Noah to sleep upstairs.
She was exhausted.
Within minutes...
She accidentally fell asleep beside the crib.
Outside...
Shadow suddenly stood up.
His ears twitched.
His body froze.
He wasn't looking at the house.
He was staring into the dark woods behind it.
Then...
He began barking.
Not ordinary barking.
Desperate.
Terrified.
Wild.
The neighbors screamed from their windows.
"Shut that dog up!"
Someone even threatened to call animal control.
But Shadow wouldn't stop.
He ran circles around the backyard fence.
Digging.
Whining.
Looking toward the trees.
As if...
Something horrible was coming.
No one listened.
May you like
Until...
A single tiny cry echoed from inside the house.
